As match day three ends, it’s straight into game week four against familiar opposition in the Champions League. In Glasgow, a repeat of the match-up on display at Anfield just a week earlier will grace our television screens on Wednesday evening.

The Premier League side came up trumps in that 90-minute period. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s rasping free-kick put Liverpool on their way after seven minutes, followed by a Mohamed Salah penalty to cap off proceedings. The Reds were rarely threatened. The two shots on target from Rangers suggest as much.
In the home corner, 23 shots – 10 on target – and an inspired Allan Mcgregor showing somehow kept the scoreline respectable. Nevertheless, it will take a similar performance in the sticks alongside a deafening Ibrox to encourage improvement in terms of points on the board.
However, there may be a glimpse of hope for the blue side of Glasgow. Unfortunately, Luis Diaz, Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been ruled out of the match with injury. In truth, the right-back hasn’t covered himself in glory this season, though Rangers will be well aware of his attacking capabilities after the set piece last week. Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Roberto Firmino will be the three likely deputising for the missing defenders – not too much of a step down in quality, although Liverpool will miss Alexander-Arnold’s presence on the right wing.
An odds-against pick that landed just one week ago was the aim, and that’s what we’ve got here. First up, Darwin Nunez commands two-thirds of the three-pronged builder. The Uruguayan unleashed six shots at Alan Mcgregor in the reverse fixture, four ending up on target. That’s a pretty impressive percentage of strikes working the keeper.
It was a personal mini battle between the pair that the Rangers shot-stopper ultimately won. Nunez will again back himself to get into decent shooting positions as he did on Merseyside. That assured thought process going into the game should translate into another sizable haul of goal attempts.
Liverpool will need to shelve the crushing defeat against Arsenal on the weekend as they walk out on the Ibrox pitch. For us, though, it provides an insight into Nunez’s game. The frontman appeared sharp. He got his goal following a sumptuous cross from Luis Diaz, seeming lively and keen to have a crack when the opportunity arose. That’s precisely the type of form we want him in here. Nunez recorded three shots at goal with two, one being his 34th-minute goal, finding the target.
Now, this isn’t the Liverpool we know and love. It’s difficult to put a finger on why performances have become so limp, as it’s not just one area letting down the six-time European champions for the downturn in form. Abject defensive showings prop up star players underperforming in forward areas, as a lack of intensity engulfs the eleven – the exact trait a Jurgen Klopp squad often boasts.
In the hope that Liverpool arrive desiring to prove a point, they should again have too much for this Rangers side. It could have been more than two without Alan Mcgregor at the top of his game last Tuesday. The Ibrox crowd and its influence here is a concern, as is Liverpool’s current record of conceding first in matches. So, the inclusion to score in both halves has legs to materialise even if Liverpool succumb to a slow start.
