Monza has always been best known for its Grand Prix motor racing circuit. From September 28th 2018, former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi set about changing that. Having just sold AC Milan, Berlusconi took over the then third division side from the Lombardy region. In May an extra-time play-off victory over Pisa earned them promotion to Serie A for the first time.
CEO Adriano Galliani has high expectations and set a target of a top 10 finish. Coach Giovanni Stroppa has a host of new faces at his disposal. It will be interesting to see if this collection of loans, free transfers and lower-budget signings can gel into a competitive team. They at least got off to a winning start with a 3-2 cup victory over Frosinone on Sunday.
It may be a case of who isn’t at Torino that has the most impact on their season. Andrea Belotti left the club in the summer having been their league top-scorer in six of the last seven years. The Granata only picked up 10 points from their opening 14 Serie A away games. But ending the season with three wins and two draws on the road will give them confidence. Likewise starting this campaign with a 3-0 win over Palermo in the Coppa Italia.

The absence of Belotti presents a fantastic opportunity and at excellent value. Saša Lukić will replace the Italian as Ivan Jurić’s chosen penalty taker. This helped the Serbian register his best goals return last term. Last weekend Torino’s captain sent a low drive past Mirko Pigliacelli from open play. So he is not solely dependent on spot kicks to hit the back of the net.

Xavi’s return to Camp Nou as a manager at least allowed Barcelona a return to performances something like his days there as a player. Seventeen La Liga wins from his 24 games in charge ensured a 2nd place finish. An unbeaten pre-season would normally heighten optimism. However, the club’s huge financial issues still hang over the team. The Catalans have not yet registered new signings Robert Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Franck Kessie. Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto have renewed their contracts, but are also yet to be registered.
Rayo Vallecano beat Barcelona home and away last term. The scoreline was 1-0 on both occasions. No side has beaten Barca in three consecutive league games without conceding since Real Madrid in 1958. Los Franjirrojos were glad to see the season end. Andoni Iraola saw his side win just two of their last 20 La Liga fixtures.

Although linked with a move to Chelsea, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may still be needed by the Spanish giants. The Gabon international is in line to play on the opening weekend if the new signings remain unregistered. Odds of 2.00 for him to score are too big if he does start. The 32-year-old striker hit 11 goals from 17 league appearances under Xavi. He also scored a confident chipped finish against Miami in pre-season. PSG vs Montpellier Preview

“We don’t want flashy-bling-bling anymore” said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. A few days later Christophe Galtier was unveiled as the new manager of the French champions. Four wins from four pre-season games produced 13 goals. Then a 4-0 thrashing of Nantes to take the Trophée des Champions.
Their Ligue 1 defence began with a 5-0 hammering away at Clermont. Seems like the new boss is going against the non-flashy directive. But the highly respected Galtier, who is known for producing tactically disciplined teams, did keep it simple. Picking the same starting 11 for two consecutive competitive games. Something predecessor Mauricio Pochettino never once did.
Montpellier ended last season disastrously with no win in their last nine Ligue 1 outings. They fell to seven defeats and picked up two draws. A crazy opening game saw La Paillade share four goals with Troyes inside the first 17 minutes. But there was relief as Téji Savanier scored his second to end that losing sequence.

Olivier Dall’Oglio saw his side’s porous defence leak 14 goals during pre-season. With signs after last weekend that that trend will continue. Especially against a PSG outfit that have won the last five league meetings by an aggregate of 18-1. The corresponding fixture last season saw a 2-0 win. Most recently a 4-0 triumph in May at Stade de la Mosson. PSG are 22 home league games without defeat, keeping ten clean sheets in the process. I expect both those stats to increase by one upon the conclusion of this game.
