Two more winless sides come together at De Oude Meerdijk. Newly promoted Emmen received a rude awakening to the Eredivisie. An opening day 4-1 thrashing at the hands of PSV Eindhoven. They did get their first point on the board last weekend. Dick Lukkien’s men looked to have done enough to claim all three points. But an 89th-minute Julen Lobete strike meant settling for just the one.
It was back-to-back draws to start the new season for Utrecht. Finding themselves two goals down at half-time the Domstedelingen threw on new signing Bas Dost. The 33-Year-Old Forward snapped up from Club Brugge fired a brace and salvaged a point. No such excitement in last weekend’s goalless draw with RKC Waalwijk.
FC Emmen vs Utrecht Best Bet
I was surprised that the visitors were available at odds against to win this one. But it is a price I will certainly take. Utrecht finished a respectable 7th in the top flight last season. With FC Emmen doing battle in the tier below, albeit successfully.
Henk Fraser has talked positively ahead of the game. Stating two points out of two games was “not what we had in mind”. Going on to say they are looking to dominate the tie. This attitude was backed up by defender Hidde ter Avest. The 25-year-old confirmed “The fact that we haven’t won yet outweighs the fact that we are unbeaten,”.
With defending champions Ajax up next this will certainly be a game marked down to claim all three points.

Porto vs Sporting Preview

Saturday night sees us treated to an early season clash between two fierce rivals of Portuguese football.
Porto are unbeaten in the last five head-to-heads. Also maintaining their perfect start to their title defence with a 1-0 victory against Vizela. A stark contrast to the 5-1 mauling of Maritimo on the opening weekend. But proof they can tough it out too.
Sporting posted an underwhelming pre-season with just one win in their five friendlies. That form continued into the new campaign. Losing the lead three times in taking a point from a visit to Braga. They will hope the comfortable 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Rio Ave will kickstart their season.
On a night when the rematch of Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua takes top billing in boxing. These two Portuguese heavyweights provide the perfect warm-up. As they are more than likely to prove “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” too.
Porto vs Sporting Best Bet
The result here will as ever be tough to call. My only interest is in the cards market. The last four meetings between these bitter rivals have seen 31 yellow cards and three red. With a man being sent off in three of the last four battles. This does not include the four red cards issued after the whistle in the fixture on February 11th. A match which ended in a mass brawl involving around 40 people, including the ball boys.
The referee tasked with controlling this mayhem is Nuno Miguel Serrano Almeida. An official who has shown a red card in three of his last six appointments. Including when these two sides met in April. In fact, he has sent a player off in each of the last two occasions he has refereed this match-up.
