Scotland hosts long-standing international rivals England at Hampden Park in a friendly on Tuesday, September 12th, to mark 150 years of Scottish football.
With both sides boasting 100% records in their Euro qualifying with four wins from four, both Steve Clark and Gareth Southgate will see this Scotland vs England match-up as the perfect opportunity to experiment and assess how tournament-ready a lot of their squads are.
Bet Builder odds: 6.00
International Friendlies September 12th, 2023
Odds via bet365 as at 00:00, September 7th. Odds may now differ.
Steve Clark’s Scotland team has enjoyed a faultless qualifying campaign, with four wins from four games. A dominant 3-0 victory at home to Cyprus was followed up by a mightily impressive 2-0 home win against Spain. Despite recording 67% possession, Spain could only muster a meager eight shots all game in a lackluster performance against a steely Scotland defence. Box-to-box midfielder Scott McTominay scored a brace in both games.
Scotland then traveled to a Norway side containing the world-class talent of Manchester City talisman Erling Haaland and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. An Erling Haaland penalty gave the Norwegians the lead before goals in the 87th minute from Lyndon Dykes, and the 89th minute from Kenny McLean led the Tartan Army to a smash-and-grab victory. Goals from Callum McGregor and Scott McTominay saw Steve Clark’s side ease past Georgia in the last outing. A victory over Cyprus will all but confirm Scotland’s participation in Euro 2024.
England are also enjoying a flawless campaign. A gritty 2-1 victory in Naples against Euro holders Italy set the precedent for the rest of the games. 2-0, 0-4, and 7-0 wins over Ukraine, Malta, and North Macedonia, respectively, showcased England’s abundance of talent throughout the pitch. Gareth Southgate has a strong squad to rely on, with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, in particular, impressing after moves to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, respectively.
While Scotland have obviously looked strong, England are fifth in the world rankings and should have enough quality to edge past their Scottish counterparts.
The second and final selection comes in the under’s goal section. Under five goals has landed in 27 of the last 29 games for Scotland, with a 4-1 win over nine-man Armenia and a 3-2 victory over Israel being the exceptions. It has also landed in Scotland’s last five friendlies, with the Tartan Army only winning one of these five games- a 1-0 victory over lowly Luxembourg. Scotland’s four qualifying games so far have also seen under five goals.
For England, under five goals has landed in 18/24, with some heavy wins over lowly teams skewing these records. A 7-0 win over North Macedonia, a 6-2 win over Iran, a 10-0 win over San Marino, and 5-0 wins over Albania and Andorra are flaws in the record. England Win and Under 4.5 Goals have also landed four times of their last six, with the dismantling of North Macedonia and the 2-1 World Cup defeat to France exceptions.
Additionally, this bet has landed in the last six international friendlies for Gareth Southgate’s side. In the last two friendlies—a 3-0 victory over Ivory Coast and a 2-1 victory over Scotland—the 52-year-old decided to rotate and experiment, leading to lower-tempo, lower-scoring games.
Scotland are also yet to beat England since 1999.
With rotation expected, Callum Wilson is likely to be thrown in for the start. The Newcastle striker scored on his debut in a friendly against the U.S.A. in 2018. Since joining the Magpies, the 31-year-old has had an impressive goalscoring record, with 40 goals in 79 league games, including 18 last season and two so far this campaign. He has two goals in eight caps and will be hoping to add to this against Scotland.
