Arsenal got back to winning ways this past weekend, defeating Crystal Palace 5-0. For a side whose attacking credentials were being questioned, scoring five was a significant statement.
We talked to former Man Utd and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre who spoke about Arsenal’s goal scoring issues and what could be the solution to them.
Silvestre discussed whether Dusan Vlahovic could be a quick fix and also what has been ailing Gabriel Martinelli this season.
In this article:
Silvestre endorsed a potential move for Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic but the Frenchman thinks that a deal for him in January is unlikely due to FFP restrictions.
“I don’t think they can afford him financially. Based on ability and technically he’s excellent.”
“We would have to deal with Juventus which isn’t easy. Would he be a good buy? Yes. 100%.”
“I don’t think it will happen unless they can get him on loan.”
Silvestre believes that Vlahovic would be more of a summer signing and further adds that Juventus will be fighting for the Serie A title with Internazionale, so they won’t be willing to let go of their prized goalscorer.
“We have two weeks left of the window. It’s more of a summer signing because Juventus are fighting for the title and it wouldn’t be smart to jeopardise their chances.”
“It will be a close fight with Inter for the title and they want to maintain that so it’s not realistic this winter.”
Another striker Arsenal have been linked to is Dominic Solanke who’s been firing on all cylinders for Bournemouth. Silvestre is a fan of the English forward but doubts that he’ll be available this winter.
“Good strikers are so difficult to catch. Would Solanke be available? I doubt it.”
“He’s good. He’s made a lot of progress since his debut. He looks like a veteran in the Premier League.”
“I like him a lot.”
Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli has struggled to hit the heights of last season but Silvestre has faith in him and thinks he’ll score a lot more in the second part of the season.
The Frenchman thinks that Martinelli’s confidence has taken a hit which is why he is trying extra hard to make things right.
“I think a lot of it has to do with confidence.”
“In this moment when you’re not achieving your objectives and not scoring goals you need to look at the next opportunity and do everything right.”
“Whether it’s his movement, an assist for someone or creating the opportunities himself.”
“Sometimes, he’s rushing into the decision or his execution but I think it’s mainly about getting the next goal ASAP because he’s a tremendous player and he will score more in the second part of the season.”
