Here at bettingexpert, Devang Prasad sat down with former Premier League defender Mikael Silvestre. The pair discussed the managerial future of Xabi Alonso. Alonso is enjoying a fine season at Bayern Leverkusen as they sit top of the Bundesliga and has been hotly tipped with the Liverpool job. They also touched on the legacy of Jurgen Klopp who will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
In this article:
Following the announcement that Jurgen Klopp will depart from Liverpool at the end of the season, the club has been linked with several high-profile candidates. Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi are among the names that are currently generating buzz.
Since joining Leverkusen last season, Alonso has dramatically improved the club’s performance, leading them to the top of the Bundesliga and showcasing some of the best football the club has seen in a while. Although his style differs from Klopp’s, Alonso has demonstrated an aptitude for developing an effective game strategy.
Silvestre, who closely follows the Bundesliga, believes that Liverpool’s ideal choice would be their former midfielder Alonso. However, he cautions that appointing former players as managers does not always guarantee success.
“The quality for a new manager is important of course, but to get a former player would be a bonus. Jurgen Klopp didn´t have any affiliation with Liverpool but he made a success story.”
“Ideally, they would get Alonso. But again, Xavi came and won the title with Barcelona and he is on his way out.”
“My pick would be Alonso. I´ve been impressed with what he has done at Leverkusen. They are playing very nice football and they are competing in every competition.”
“They are playing attacking football and they are scoring a lot of goals.”
”Gerrard is a legend and he will always be. But I think he should take his time to have everything covered when he gets there one day.”
“He needs to make sure that he will have a good time at Liverpool.”
Klopp will be remembered as one of Liverpool’s greatest managers. The German has been instrumental in bringing the Premier League and Champions League titles back to Anfield, as well as securing the World Champions title. Since succeeding Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, Klopp has introduced both honours and dynamic football to the red side of Liverpool.
Interestingly, Silvestre is already considering the future, expressing concerns about Liverpool’s ability to maintain their top status after Klopp’s departure. He also points out uncertainties regarding the future of Mohamed Salah, who has been rumoured to be considering a move away for the past two summers.
“He was there nine years and he won four trophies. The way they played football with the energy he gave to the team has been great.”
“When we talk about legacy, we have to see what Sir Alex did for 26 years. We can only look back at the trophies and he won some major ones.”
“But once he is gone, there will be a new manager. So, they have to look forward and then one day we can look at his legacy.”
“If I was a Liverpool supporter, I would be worried. The new manager has to convince Salah to stay as well.”
Speculation continues to circle that Klopp will be at the helm of the German national team at some point in the near future. Having now decided to leave Liveroool, he would be free to do so but currently has Julian Nagelsmann blocking his path.
Nagelsmann is seen as one of football’s brightest young coaches despite his struggles at Bayern Munich. However, Silvestre says he doesn’t think Klopp will be too eager to return to football in the short team.
“I don’t think he will get a new job very soon because of the reason why he is leaving Liverpool. He needs to focus on having a normal life. He can coach the kids in the weekend, that’s it.”
