Slovenia earned a hard-fought draw against Denmark in their first Group C outing. The point gives them an advantage over their opponents here but Serbia won’t be disheartened by their first game. The Serbs were narrowly beaten 1-0 by England. They were able to restrict Gareth Southgate’s side to very few chances and managed to get the game out of the way without suffering on goal difference.
Our Slovenia vs Serbia Prediction is: draw 1-1
Europe, Euro 2024, Thursday, June 20th, 14:00 (UK)
Slovenia‘s form coming into the competition was strong. They are now unbeaten in seven matches but they had to dig deep to keep that run going in their opening group game against Denmark. They were able to retain just 32% possession but did manage to create two big chances despite having to remain compact.
A positive result against Serbia is seemingly a must with England awaiting them in the final group match. Expect them to sit deep and look to remain solid once again. Slovenia are the underdogs but their recent form makes the draw an appealing bet. They have already shown they are capable of frustrating more talented teams and their last two matches have ended all square.
There was little in the way of goalmouth action as Serbia lost against England. Both teams combined for an xG of just 0.7 and there were just 11 shots in the match. Serbia have the firepower required up front but they should be reluctant to open up once again. They have picked up just two wins in their last seven matches.
While this doesn’t look set to be a particularly high-scoring game, there looks to be a decent chance that both teams will score in the match. This bet landed in five of the opening seven matches of the tournament and the second round of fixtures tends to see more action with some teams staring down the barrel of elimination.
Serbia scored an average of 1.88 goals per game during their qualifying campaign which saw them finish four points behind Hungary. They conceded an average of 1.12 over that period. In their last 10 matches, Serbia have managed to keep just two clean sheets.
Slovenia boast a strong scoring record in their recent games. Their last 10 matches, including friendlies, have seen them score an average of 1.6 goals per game. They are conceding just 0.8 goals on average in those matches but Serbia must roll the dice in this encounter.
These teams went head-to-head in the UEFA Nations League back in 2022. Both teams scored in both matches. The most recent of which was a 2-2 draw.
Aleksandar Mitrovic is the main goal threat for Serbia. He forms a deadly strike partnership with Dusan Vlahovic and their physical presence should cause problems for the Slovenian backline in this game. The former Fulham striker had to feed off scraps in his team’s first game against England. He had just 24 touches and failed to muster up a single shot on target. However, he will undoubtedly survive here, with Serbia set to see much more of the ball.
Mitrovic moved to the Saudi Pro League when he was at the peak of his powers but he still continues to have an impact for the national team. He was part of a large swathe of players who moved to the Gulf nation after Cristiano Ronaldp’s move to Al-Nassr but only Cristiano managed to score more league goals than Mitrovic last season. Aleksandar scored 28 goals in 28 league appearances to help AL-Hilal win the title.
The striker is Serbia’s all-time top scorer having scored 58 goals in 92 appearances for this country. He scored in their final warm-up game against Sweden and would love to grab his first goal of the tournament here.
Slovenia vs Serbia Prediction odds via bet365 as at 11:33, June 17th, 2024. Copa America 2024 Odds may now differ.
Benjamin Sesko is the standout player for Slovenia. He has attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in recent months but has recently penned a new deal that will keep him at RB Leipzig. There were no injury concerns for Matjaz Kek following the first game.
Filip Kostic came off injured for Serbia in their game against England the short turnaround means it’s unlikely he will feature here. Dusan Tadic was dropped from the starting eleven for the first game but could well return for this one with the Serbs looking to show more attacking impetus. Milinkovic-Savic could be the player that drops out to accommodate the additional attacker.
Slovenia possible starting lineup:
Oblak; Karnicnik, Drkusicm Bijol, Janza; Stojanovic, Cerin, Elsnik, Mlakar; Sporar, Sesko
Serbia possible starting lineup:
Rajkovic; Veljkovic, Milenkovic, Pavlovic; Zivkovic, Lukic, Gudelj, Madenovic; Tadic, Vlahovic, Mitrovic
