Germany, Bundesliga, Friday, March 8th, 19:30 (UK)
Stuttgart’s home form has been a crucial factor in their league position. Their attack has been electric in front of their own fans, so we are backing them to win this one by at least a two-goal margin.
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side secured a 3-2 away win over Wolfsburg last weekend, ensuring the gap to RB Leipzig remained seven points. The victory ensures they’ll carry confidence into this one, and we should see a similarly excellent display going forward once again. Hoeneß’s men are averaging 2.92 goals per home game in the Bundesliga this season, winning nine of those 12 matches in the process. Stuttgart’s last four home wins have come by a margin of two goals or greater.
Union Berlin lost the reverse fixture 3-0 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei and Stuttgart are even more menacing on home turf. Urs Fuscher’s men picked up just their second away win of the season in their last match on the road. Over the course of 12 away matches in the German flight, they are averaging just 0.75 goals per game.
Despite Union Berlin’s goal-scoring woes on the road, both teams to score in the match still looks a good bet in this clash. Stuttgart’s matches in 2024 have seen a glut of goals with an average of 3.89 per game. Both teams have scored in eight of those nine games, the exception was a 1-0 defeat away at Bochum. Sebastian Hoeneß had 19 shots in that one but was unable to find that elusive goal. Deniz Undav squandered a huge chance with the only goal of the game coming in the 50th minute.
Union Berlin have managed to put breathing space between themselves and the relegation zone in recent weeks. The defeat at home to Dortmund last weekend ended a four-match unbeaten run. Both Union and their opponents are averaging a goal a game in their last five matches.
The underlying stats also make for good reading. Stuttgart’s home matches in the Bundesliga have seen an average xG of 3.66 per game, more than any other side’s. The average xG for a game in the German top flight is 3.09.
Serhou Guirasssy is 2nd in the Bundesliga top scorers list with a tally of 20 goals. He has slowed in recent months since jetting off to the African Cup of Nations, but the striker has been back amongst the goals in recent weeks. He has scored three in his last three appearances. Guirassy also managed to find the net in the reverse fixture so we are backing him to score once again.
Deniz Undav performed extremely well as Stuttgart’s lone striker in Guirassy’s absence, but the Guinea international remains the focal point of their attack. Undav’s last start came as a number ten, and he suffered a muscle injury during that win over Darmstadt. Guirassy will start up front here, and he boats formidable numbers.
Guirassy has a non-penalty xG of 0.7 per 90 minutes. That puts him in the 97th percentile when compacted with all other forwards across Europe’s top five leagues. He has managed to over-perform this quite considerably, with an average of 0.9 non-penalty goals per 90.
Stuttgart vs Union Berlin Prediction odds via bet365 as at 05:07, March 14th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Stuttgart will be with Dan Axel-Zagadou and Nikolas Nartey for Friday night’s match. Deniz Undav has been brought off with an injury in his last two starts. He didn’t play a part in the win over Wolfsburg but could be in contention for this one. He appears unlikely to start.
Union Berlin do not have any injury concerns coming into this clash. Fischer could decide to name the starting eleven that put in a spirited display against Borussia Dortmund. Union were beaten 2-0 but had plenty of chances of their own.
Stuttgart possible starting lineup: Bredlow; Vagnoman, Roualt, Anton, Ito; Karazor, Stiller; Jeong, Millot, Fuhrich; Guirassy
Union Berlin possible starting lineup: Ronnow; Doekhi, Vogt, Leita; Juranovic, Tousart, Khedira, Schafer, Roussillon; Volland, Hollerbach
