Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is reportedly attracting interest from some of Serie A’s top clubs as a potential move looms in the upcoming winter transfer window. The versatile Japanese defender has yet to make an appearance this season due to a knee injury, but his absence from Mikel Arteta’s side is not down to lack of talent. According to The Sun, Tomiyasu could be on his way out of the Emirates, with Juventus, Inter Milan, and SSC Napoli all closely monitoring his situation. Standing at 188 cm, Tomiyasu has drawn the attention of some of Italy’s biggest footballing names. His versatility, being able to play across the backline, makes him a valuable asset. Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli are all keen to bolster their defensive options, and Tomiyasu could be the ideal fit. If a deal is struck, it would see the 25-year-old returning to Serie A, where he previously enjoyed a successful spell with Bologna before joining Arsenal.
Tomiyasu made the switch to the Premier League in August 2021, arriving at the Emirates for £16 million. Since then, he has made 83 appearances for the Gunners, contributing 2 goals and 6 assists. While primarily deployed as a right-back, his ability to play as a center-back or left-back has been crucial for Arteta’s tactical flexibility.
If Tomiyasu moves back to Italy, it could create opportunities for other players within Arsenal’s squad. Jakub Kiwior, in particular, could stand to benefit from the Japanese international’s departure, with an increased chance of securing a regular spot in the starting XI.
Despite his current injury, Tomiyasu’s value remains high due to his experience and versatility. The 42-time capped Japan international has impressed both in the Premier League and on the international stage, and a return to Serie A could revitalise his career as he seeks regular first-team football.
With Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli all expressing interest, the prospect of Tomiyasu returning to Italy is gaining momentum. Whether he stays at Arsenal or moves back to Serie A, the defender’s future will likely be one of the key talking points in the January transfer window.
