Saturday morning sees three A-League games bless our screens and Matthew O’Regan is on hand with his Western United vs Western Sydney Wanderers predictions, tips and best bets preview.
With Western United languishing at the bottom of the table and the visitors chasing top spot, it is set to be an intriguing battle in Western Melbourne.
In this article:
Australia, A League, Saturday, January 27th, 6:00
Western United are the hosts on Saturday morning, knowing even if they win, they’ll still be routed to the foot of the table after a dismal start to the season. Ross Aliosi is written in United folklore, delivering their first-ever A-League title, but time might be running out for the 50-year-old, with his side picking up just seven points in 12 games.
It has been the Melbourne outfits home form that has been a major worry, with Aliosi’s side picking up just three points from five at home – a 2-1 victory over struggling Brisbane Roar. In fact, United have avoided defeat just three times this season, losing the other 12.
Western Sydney, on the other hand, has had a strong start to the season as they look to build on last season’s 4th-place finish. Marko Rudan’s side currently sit third, just four points off joint leaders Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory. It has been an inconsistent bout of form for WSW, who have won three and lost three of their last six games. However, they are firm favourites for this match and rightly so, after five first-half goals saw them win the reverse fixture 5-0.
While Western Sydney’s inconsistencies are a worry, they should be too strong for a struggling Western United side.
Despite a less-than-successful stint in England with Leeds and Blackburn, Marcus Antonsson has forged a successful career in Sweden with Malmo FF and Varnamo. He is now making a name for himself in Australia.
The Swede has had a strong start to his career down under, scoring five goals in thirteen starts. He is averaging 0.45 xG per90 from 2.96 shots.
Western United have the third worst defence in the league, conceding 28 goals in 12 games and are yet to keep a clean sheet. Aloisi’s side have conceded at least two in their five of their last six, conceding at least three goals in half of these matches.
A leaky defence against a clinical goalscorer is a recipe for success.
While the A-League is a division famed for its high-scoring games, I am siding with the ‘unders’ in this fixture.
While Western United games are averaging 3.25 goals per game, this average is exaggerated by their high-scoring away games that average just shy of 4 goals a game. In front of their own fans, United are seeing an average of 2.4 goals. While over 2.5 goals have landed in 3/5 games at AAMI Park, only one game has gone over three goals – the 3-1 loss to Adelaide United.
Western Sydney games average 2.69 goals per game, with their away game average lower at 2.4. Only 2/5 (40%) of WSW away games have seen over 2.5 goals land, with the other three seeing BTTS – No land.
With an out-of-form home side and a defensively resolute away side, don’t be surprised to see a cagey, low-scoring affair.
Western United vs Western Sydney Wanderers Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00 January 22nd January 2024 Odds may now differ.
The hosts are without Sebastian Pasquali and Nikita Rukavytsya through injury, while the visitors are without Dutch central midfielder Jorrit Hendrix and star forward Brandon Borrello.
Western Sydney Wanderers are also without star goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas due to his participation in the Asian Cup which provides somewhat of a blow for the visiting side.
