It’s just the fourth time this season Cornet has seen the second round of an event, in what has been a trying year for the 33-year-old veteran.
Now, nearly all of her losses have come against legitimately tough WTA competition, and four of her five total wins this season have come on the clay, but she’s still yet to make a quarterfinal appearance in 2023, even at some of these lower-level tournaments that she’s entered.
She was never one to overpower her opposition, but this season has seen the solidity from the baseline drop off a bit and that makes it extremely tough for someone with her game style to find wins.
The good news here is that she’s playing a flatter-hitting hard courter in the second round and someone who has never really had success on clay courts unless she dipped down to the lower levels of the game (ITF W15s and ITF W25s).
Jang has also only played one match this year on clay – her first-round victory against Fiona Ferro, whose ranking has plummeted after some trying times this past year off the court.
Without the power to hit through both Cornet and the slower conditions, and considering the Frenchwoman has the surface edge and a much greater pedigree overall, this is a tremendous opportunity for Cornet to play her first quarterfinal of the season, and it couldn’t come at a better time, with her home grand slam of Roland Garros just a matter of days away.

As tough as 2023 has been, this is still a matchup that is taking place between an established WTA Tour-level player and one who finds most of her success at the ITF level.
Between someone who has a clay-court pedigree over the course of her career and someone who has done nearly all of her damage at the lowest levels of the professional game on this surface.
Declining or not, Cornet still deserves a bit more respect in the betting markets against someone like Jang than we’re seeing in this spot.
