Flavio Cobolli vs Zizou Bergs Prediction: Trust Cobolli in Tougher Conditions

  • Prediction: Cobolli -3.5 games
  • Best Odds: 1.93

  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds updated at 4:30 am UK Time on August 29th, 2024.

Backing Bergs to come out firing after an extremely long match is never a good idea. In a best-of-five set format at a major? Even less so. Day off or not, the Belgian has always had issues during long matches or backing them up if he manages to come through them.

We saw this just last week in Winston-Salem where a pair of three-setters drained him physically and he was dispatched without much fuss by Alex Michelsen.

On the flip side, Cobolli is one of the form players of the summer, a young gun on the rise, possesses the firepower to succeed on hard courts, and never seems to wilt in hot conditions – important for August in New York City.

I’m surprised we’re seeing this handicap under 4.5 games, let alone being below the four-game mark as well.

Flavio Cobolli Recent Form

Now the world No. 31, Cobolli has put together a huge summer on the hard courts in North America.

Alex Michelsen, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger Aliassime, Tommy Paul. All were sent packing at one point by the 22-year-old.

This kind of run isn’t unexpected, considering how athletic Cobolli is and how big his ball striking can be. Those traits are two that translate well to this surface. It’s the fact that before this season he simply hadn’t shown signs of someone who would be so competitive on the quicker surface.

Now he’s tasked with a Bergs, who has always had physical struggles in long matches, and heat coming off a long five-setter in the opening round? I think he’ll be a tad disappointed if he doesn’t walk away from this one with the victory.

Zizou Bergs Recent Form

Playing with house money. That has to be how Bergs feels after he came back from a break of serve deficit twice in his opening round match, including from 5-6* with Pavel Kotov serving for the match and sending him packing.

Alas, he broke back when he had to and then won the extended tiebreak to set up this encounter with the young Italian.

Bergs has always had the talent, but the mental game, physical breakdowns and propensity to spew errors have always held him back.

If he had a different, or easier, draw, I’d be more inclined to think he has a good chance at reaching the final 32. With Cobolli up next, I can’t help but to oppose him.

Flavio Cobolli vs Zizou Bergs H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first meeting between the two, despite how much they’ve both played on the Challenger circuit in the last few seasons.
