Corentin Moutet vs. Pedro Cachin Best Bet: Friday, September 2nd

The third round is set to commence on Friday from Flushing Meadows in New York City, and our men’s selection for the day comes from the matchup between Corentin Moutet and surprise third-round debutant, Pedro Cachin.

I can say with certainty that seeing Cachin in the third round of a hard-court grand slam event was not on my list of things that would happen during the 2022 season. Yet here we are, with the 27-year-old featuring at this stage of a major for the first time in his career – and off his best surface.

Continuing the run, however, will be no easy feat, as he takes on Moutet’s tricky left-handed game.

It has been a sensational year for the Argentine, who has climbed into the world’s top-75 rankings-wise, won several events at the lower Challenger Tour level and made several additional finals. The caveat? All of those impressive runs have come on clay.

The fact is, he’s still only won a handful of matches on hard courts and those wins came against clay courters and Brandon Holt. Moutet is a big step up in competition.

The Frenchman had been struggling for form through the French Open, but used the Challenger Tour to find some success on clay, before coming to North America to play in the U.S. Open qualifying draw. After bowing out to sensational prospect Yibing Wu (who’s also still alive in this event), Moutet has picked up relatively convincing wins against Stanislas Wawrinka and Botic van de Zandschulp – dropping just a single set along the way.

As a consistent player with a ton of variety, but also with the ability to hit through the courts when he sees his chance, he’s well-equipped to deal with Cachin’s baseline grinding and defensive style of play. Moutet does that just as well, commits fewer errors and employs more slices and dropshots to help him win points.

He’s also far more comfortable on hard courts and has spent far less time on court than his counterpart in this one.

While Cachin’s run has been impressive – especially for those of us that have watched him work so hard all season at the Challenger Tour level – his wins haven’t been all that impressive and his opponents have been far from the quality Moutet presents.

Ultimately, the respect he’s being afforded in the betting markets here is a bit much for me, as I have the 23-year-old winning 78% of the time. That would put the fair odds much closer to 1.25 than the 1.40 on offer.

  • Selection: Moutet to win
  • Odds:1.40 (10bet)
  • Stakes: 6/10
  • Bonus: Moutet -1.5 sets at 1.73 odds at Coolbet with 4/10 stakes.
