Well that was a little closer than it needed to be considering the first 10 games of the match, but a win is a win and we’ll take the cash, as Mayar Sherif beats young gun Brenda Fruhvirtova 7-5 in the deciding set.
For Thursday’s article selection from Colina, we’ll preview the match between Kateryna Baindl and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva.

Baindl may have gotten us a few days back, but we’re going back to the well opposing her here, with one of the more talented youngsters the women’s game has to offer.
It’s a battle of two players that are known for their consistency from the baseline and point construction, with the young Andorran the more natural clay courter of the two.
I was impressed with Baindl’s ability to inject pace into her forehand wing in her last match against Tamara Zidansek, but ultimately, it was her ability to extend points that wore down the Slovenian – something that will be much tougher to do against a 17-year-old who is used to playing longer points herself.
The big focus for Jimenez Kasintseva this season was to add a bit more pace and aggression to her game, and it’s something she’s done very well. Compared to last season, I’m impressed with her ability to dictate a bit more off her forehand and has ensured that her serve isn’t nearly as much of a sitting duck as it once was (that’s not to say it couldn’t use a bit more work).
Her second-round encounter with Despina Papamichail should prepare her well for the wall-like defensive abilities she’ll see from Baindl as well, and she passed that test in even more impressive fashion than even I had anticipated. Baindl has more to her game, but I’m confident that Jimenez Kasintseva can hit through the defences more than I was entering the week.
This is a pretty even matchup for me, with Jimenez Kasintseva having a much higher ceiling and coming through to this point in more convincing fashion for me than Baindl.
I don’t think she should be a substantial favourite in this one, but at over evens, I’m willing to back her in this one.
