Well the win streak on the women’s selections couldn’t be extended on Thursday. It looked promising, as Tatjana Maria raced out to a 5-0* 0-15 lead and was just three points from a flawless first set, before winning it 6-3. She also failed to convert break points in three different games in the third and lost from *5-1 up in the final set tiebreak.

The third match of the night in Chennai features the current tournament favourite in Linette, taking on the big-serving Canadian in what, on paper, appears to be an exciting match (odds at time of writing indicate that Marino is the third favourite to win the event).
For my money, this one actually seems pretty one-sided, though. In my power ratings of the remaining players, Linette is in a tier up top all by herself and should be a rather sizable favourite against any of the remaining field – Marino included.
For starters, this week has proven to be as much about fitness as it has ability. Linette is not only more athletic and able to deal with the demanding conditions (often over 30 degrees and with humidity in the 80% region, even in the evenings), but has spent less time on court.
While Marino has had some quick sets of her own, Linette has only needed to play more than eight games in a set once through two rounds.
Linette also matches up really well with the less mobile and more one-dimensional Canadian. As a solid mover, she should be able to track down some of Marino’s bigger shots, and as an adept counter-puncher, she should also be able to slap that power back into open space.

As much as I’d love to avoid betting against a fellow Canadian, this spot is far too good to pass up.
Whether it comes to form on the week, overall hard-court prowess, ability to deal with the tougher conditions or the matchup in this spot, Linette has to be a much larger favourite than she is at the moment.
I wouldn’t have her price over 1.50 against anyone in this field, including the much-heralded youngster Linda Fruhvirtova.
I’m comfortable taking out a decent-sized position here backing the Pole, who really should have her sights set on taking down her third career WTA title and first since February of 2020.
