After a long stretch of injuries keeping her out and the ensuing struggles to find form and consistency with her power-centric game, Tauson is finally looking like the player that burst onto the scene and into the top-35 in the world as a teenager.
I’ll tell you, I for one am a big believer in her game and am more than happy to get out in front of the market in recognizing her game is back on track for the first time in a long time.
The 20-year-old has an incredibly big serve, powerful groundstrokes and when she’s playing her best, she’s controlling them superbly and not looking to crush every single shot, playing with patience that allows players to take that next step.
This is the perfect matchup for her as well, considering Avanesyan is a player who doesn’t do a whole heck of a lot.
Make no mistake, her defending is elite from the baseline, but she’s not really a counterpuncher and struggles to generate anything herself, meaning she’s almost entirely reliant on her opponents to fail and beat themselves.
That may have worked against an inferior Leolia Jeanjean, who really isn’t a WTA talent in the second round, or against a flat baller who has never fared well at the French Open and was likely playing at below 100% in Belinda Bencic.
I don’t think that will cut it when taking on a big ball striker and competent clay courter in Tauson. Especially when you consider that Tauson just beat a competent defender from the baseline, who is much higher ranked, more talented and can actually produce more in the way of offensive tennis in Leylah Fernandez.

There are a few reasons I’m liking this handicap.
First, a number under four in women’s tennis is something that can be covered in three sets, so we’re getting a bit of insurance.
Second, I have this one closer to -5 games. Again, that game and a half is incredibly important, particularly if one set goes to a tiebreak or the match does need three sets (though I have the match ending in straights more often than not).
Finally, with the stylistic matchup here, Tauson is far more likely to apply consistent pressure to the Avanesyan serve than vice versa. This means the odds are in our favour in terms of who is more likely to win a set in lopsided fashion.
