Our men’s selection for Friday’s quarterfinal action on the ATP Tour comes from the beach town of Bastad, Sweden, as Andrey Rublev takes on Laslo Djere in the final quarterfinal matchup of the day.
After narrowly avoiding an upset in just his second match since the French Open, Rublev is set to take on an even sterner test in the quarters. The defensive abilities of Federico Coria pushed him all the way to a third-set tiebreak, and Djere could very well do one better than his Argentine counterpart and win the match outright.
As one of the less heralded clay-court players on tour, Djere has a strong clay-court game that has allowed him to hover right around the top 50 rankings-wise. As a player who often beats those he’s expected to beat, the Serbian has struggled taking down the top-tier opposition he’s played. That said, he’s kept the likes of Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Stan Wawrinka close and has seen all three of those matches go over the total games in the betting markets.
With a strong game that combines both pace and topspin, the 27-year-old has managed to post a service hold rate on the dirt this year of over 83% and a hold plus break rate of over 110% (a very strong number).
With Rublev looking vulnerable today, but also capable of going hot and cold with his aggressive baseline play, and now playing an even tougher opponent, the over looks really intriguing once again.
While Djere will have to weather the storm when the Russian’s forehand is locked in, he’s more than capable of hitting with Rublev and keeping this one close. At a slightly expensive 22 games, I still believe the over is worth a play here.
