The overvaluation of Parks continues!
I cannot believe how much respect she’s generated in the betting markets thanks to making several runs on indoor hard courts.
At this point, she’s basically an indoor hard-court specialist, with all of her noteworthy success coming in those conditions. This season, she’s been abysmal outside of her title run in Lyon. That tournament? Played indoors on hard courts.
Her game is very straightforward. A massive first serve and huge groundstrokes. The problem, it’s an unrefined game and very exploitable when she can’t end points quickly and on her terms.
Clay courts are the polar opposite of playing indoors. The weather can slow things down, the courts are the slowest in the sport and power is just one tool of many that one needs to succeed.
Her only other clay wins this season came in Madrid – played at altitude, where the serve is more impactful – and in the first round against an ITF-calibre player, and even that got hairy from a set and break up.
Rakhimova has proven several times she’s an adequate clay courter at tour level and she can certainly play prolonged rallies in a more proficient capacity, while also being able to generate a bit of pace of her own on the forehand wing.

The disparity between these two players on clay is far too great for the handicap here to be 2.5 games.
Rakhimova has a far greater history at this level, is much more consistent and has a style that can actually work on clay.
Trying to hit through these conditions and the decent defensive play of Rakhimova simply isn’t a realistic expectation for Parks. Naturally, there’s always a chance, regardless of how small it is that she does power her way through, but it’s certainly much smaller in my books than the implied probabilities in the market indicate.
