Darja Semenistaja has reached the second round of the Colina Challenger and the Latvian native will be heavily favored against Kristina Mladenovic on Wednesday in Chile.
Semenistaja’s first-round match with Francesca Jones ended early and all of our Tuesday bets were voided. Jones removed herself from the tournament up 3 – 2 in the second set so the Latvian native earned the semi-free pass.
EJ Garr’s Kristina Mladenovic vs Darja Semenistaja prediction is for the Latvian player to triumph and carry the handicap. For more expert tennis predictions, visit Expert Insights.
Odds as of 7:00 am UK Time on November 20, 2024. Odds may now differ.
It was unfortunate to see Francesca Jones retire from the match with Darja Semenistaja because it voided all our tickets. Semenistaja won the opening set as I predicted she would and Jones couldn’t finish what she started bailing from the match up 3 – 2 in the second set.
Had the Brit finished the match, the +3.5 with the Latvian was in good shape after winning the first set, 7 – 6. Semenistaja was down 4 – 1 in the opening frame and I thought she was doomed and then the momentum shifted. Jones was listed at -225 to get past Semenistaja and the line is the same today on the Latvian who is the favourite this time around at -225.
The Latvian fought back to level the first set at 4 – 4 and was up 6 – 5 serving to close out the set after breaking Jones to get in that position. Jones has been dealing with injuries and the Brit is likely headed home for the rest of the 2024 season.
With Semenistaja’s heavy chalk, I reflect on Kristina Mladenovic, who used to be such a talent on the WTA Tour.
Since I have been handicapping women’s tennis for over 30 years, I clearly remember the 2017 campaign when Mlaenovic almost cracked the top 10 WTA Rankings. Le Mademoiselle reached 11th that campaign and has spent the last five seasons ranked outside the top 50.
I will again take the Latvian but this time we have to play the -3.5 handicap at -115.
Kristina Mladenovic is 1 – 3 over the last four outings and the French native won her first-round match against 863rd-ranked Geraldine Gonzalez in straight sets.
Mladenovic is 15 – 13 on hard courts this season and is 24 – 29 in 2024.
With a 9 – 15 record on clay, Mladenovic hasn’t produced a winning record on the dirt or grass since 2019.
Darja Semenistaja is 20 – 11 on hard courts this season with a 47 – 37 record in 2024.
Semenistaja is 5 – 2 over the last 7 outings and has won 16 career tournament titles.
Kristin Mladenovic and Darja Semenistaja are meeting for the first time today at the Colina Challenger in Chile.
