Tough going for Venus Williams, who got off to a hot start on Monday, but took a tumble, needed a few medical timeouts and lost in rather straightforward fashion in the end.
For Tuesday, we’re still in the first round of action. It’s the bottom half of the draw’s turn to play out their first matches in the women’s draw. Let’s take a closer look at the match between Linda Noskova and Dalma Galfi.
In this article:
Tue, July 4th, 18:00 (UK Time)
Talk about a great draw for Noskova to start her first main draw campaign at Wimbledon. Galfi is a borderline top-100 player, but isn’t exactly the best grass courter out there.
Other than a title at the ITF level in 2022, Galfi’s results are nothing to write home about on the surface, which should help Noskova, considering she’s fairly new to grass courts at the professional level herself.
This season has seen the Hungarian exit tournaments in her first match twice, while only winning matches at the Ilkley ITF (where she was defending her title). Those victories came against a clay grinder in Emiliana Arango (in a third set tiebreak), a young American with little experience on grass in Katrina Scott (again needing a third set) and Moyuka Uchijima. Once again, nothing convincing in that run.
As for the matchup itself, there’s a reason these two generally play at different levels. Galfi has a decent serve and forehand combination, but her backhand is far from impressive, her stamina and endurance are subpar and her movement is suspect.
Noskova, on the other hand, can match her when it comes to strengths but has a massive edge on the backhand wing, as well as in the movement and fitness departments.
The Czech’s record may not be all that impressive either, but her losses both came in a deciding set and both were against players in the world’s top-20 in Ludmilla Samsonova and Jelena Ostapenko.
This is another match where I don’t understand why the market likes one player so much. Galfi to me doesn’t do anything better than Noskova, has some major disadvantages matchup-wise and has had her success against lesser competition.
Noskova should be a 5-game favourite for me and we’re seeing the market on -3.5 games. With the shift from -3.5 to -5 being rather significant in tennis betting, I’m willing to bet this one with a fairly large stake.
Odds as at 3:30 am UK Time on July 4th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
