Straight sets loss for Julia Grabher, who will certainly feel like she has a qualm with the chair umpire over a decision that proved costly in the second set tiebreak. Would she have won a decider? Who knows, but as we noted in yesterday’s article, Lauren Davis had been struggling to maintain her level and physical play in third sets of late.
For Wednesday, we’ll once again look to the WTA 125K level – this time in Saint-Malo, France, as Lucia Bronzetti takes on Leolia Jeanjean.
In this article:
May 3rd, 13:00 (UK Time)
Bronzetti was the other candidate I considered for Tuesday’s article, but the dip in form after one decent event pushed me towards leaving things be.
This time around, I’m happy to get involved in a match I think the market is once again undervaluing her in.
Keep in mind, this is a WTA 125K on clay, where she is certainly one of the better players in the field. Many of her struggles this year have come at higher levels against much better competition.
Back in a more manageable field, I’d expect her to do well this week and look to keep building on her form from the opening round that saw her breeze past Irina Shymanovich, losing just two games.
Taking on Jeanjean shouldn’t faze the Italian either, considering her French counterpart in this matchup doesn’t possess any real weapons, and Bronzetti isn’t really error-prone.
With the ability to stick around in the prolonged exchanges from the baseline and a bit more to her serve and forehand in terms of being able to actually take control of points, I’m happy to back her in a matchup that favours her on a surface where she has a comfortable edge over her opponent.
For me, this is another case – much like our men’s article for the day from Madrid – where the right player is favoured, but not quite by enough when it comes to the games handicap.
The Italian has had her struggles in 2023, but as I mentioned earlier, the vast majority have come against much much stronger competition than the likes of Jeanjean.
With a clean performance in the opening round and a run to the final at the most recent tournament played around this level (the Croissy-Beaubourg ITF event) that saw her win her four matches by an average of over six games (and that was on an indoor hard court), I think Bronzetti should be much closer to -4 games at around 1.83 than -3.5 games in the 1.90 range.
Odds as at 1:00 am on May 3rd, 2023. Odds may now differ.
