Marketa Vondrousova vs Donna Vekic Best Bet: Friday, July 7th

Nice stuff from Katie Boulter, who needed three sets, but didn’t really have trouble covering the 4-game handicap, thanks to a 6-0 start and strong decider.

For Friday, we’ll take a closer look at two fairly well-known names in the world of women’s tennis, with Marketa Vondrousova taking on Donna Vekic.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Donna Vekic Preview

Fri, July 7th, 14:30 (UK Time)

If there was ever a time to catch an in-form Vekic on grass, this would be it. The Croatian was just two points from exiting the draw, before coming back from a set and 2-5 down to beat American Sloane Stephens in three sets.

It was a match that lasted over 2.5 hours and left Vekic crying tears of joy. While that’s a nice story, it also laid out just how much that match took out of the 27-year-old.

Throw in the fact that she’s not going to get the customary day off between matches at a grand slam and she’s playing a consistent baseliner that makes a lot of balls and works the outer thirds of the court with pinpoint accuracy and you’ve got the recipe for disaster.

Vekic’s game is very serve and forehand oriented, with movement and stamina being closer to the weakness column than strengths.

That all leads me to believe that the typical edge that Vekic would have on this surface has completely evaporated given the circumstances leading into this one.

It’s funny how situations can dictate where the true price of a match could be. It’s also something that data-driven handicappers simply may not be able to account for.

That’s precisely the case with this match and this price point. Vekic has a game style that’s more suited to the surface. She’s also got a better pedigree on grass in her career, thus giving her a rather large edge in the grass-court elo rating.

Those are things that will see the market in Vekic’s favour.

With the situation favouring Vondrousova in terms of potential fatigue, her game style well suited to exploit any potential fitness problems after a long match on Thursday for Vekic and the Czech having her best grass-court season of her career, I’ll go ahead and back her to come through this one.

  • Selection: Vondrousova to win
  • Best Odds: 1.89 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 2:30 am UK Time on July 7th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
