No luck on the over on Friday, as Jason Kubler came all the way back from 0-5 in the second set to win in straight sets. Luckily, it landed right on 22 games, so it wasn’t a loss either!
Onto Tuesday, where we’ll head to the stacked 250 level event in Adelaide, as Andrey Rublev takes on the veteran top-30 mainstay Roberto Bautista Agut.
In this article:
January 3rd, 9:00 (UK Time)
Currently ranked No. 21 in the world, the 34-year-old Spaniard has begun to show some signs of slowing down, as his ability to really push the biggest names on tour with his physical, grinding, relentless counterpunching style has become more difficult to sustain.
Towards the end of the year in some quicker conditions, Bautista Agut struggled to win sets against the better players he came up against (the exception was beating Felix Auger Aliassime in pretty slow conditions in Astana). His wins were against players on the decline (Andy Murray), returning from injury (Stanislas Wawrinka) or off of their favourite surface (Pavel Kotov and Laslo Djere). Now taking on one of the best hard court players in the world, with one of the biggest forehands in the sport, it’s a big ask of him to beat or keep things close with Rublev.
With the biggest weapon on court, the ability to stick with Bautista Agut physically, and a stronger serve that should allow him to be the one applying pressure on return more consistently, I’m happy to back Rublev to win this one and cover the handicap.
With regression appearing to take hold in Bautista Agut’s game, and him not being nearly as much of an obstacle for the top players in the game as he once was, I’m comfortable backing the Russian to get this done and don’t mind giving up the three-game head start.
With quicker courts being more of an advantage for the bigger hitting Rublev at this point, he should be able to pressure Bautista Agut enough on return to find the breaks of serve needed to win with margin.
Odds as at 4:00 am on January 2nd, 2022. Odds may now differ.
