Monday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Budapest, Dalma Galfi vs Emma Navarro

Dalma Galfi vs Emma Navarro Best Bet: Monday, September 19th
Another new week brings several tournaments from across the world. This week, the WTA Tour is staging three events – all at different levels. There’s a 500 event in Japan, a 250 in South Korea and then a 125K in Budapest, Hungary.
We’ll focus on the match from the latter featuring Dalma Galfi playing on home soil, taking on Emma Navarro of the USA.

It’s been a decent summer of clay-court play for Navarro at the ITF level, but there’s still a major question mark as to whether she can translate that to potential success at the next level up, and against an opponent of Galfi’s calibre.
Now 17-3 in her last 20 matches on the dirt, Navarro is getting a decent amount of respect for her form. It’s commendable that she has put in the work to acclimate herself to the surface – and done so with aplomb to this point, no less – but context is key and that success would really only be applicable if she was playing someone of the same level talent-wise that she’s been playing in places like Olomouc, Amstelveena and Liepaja.
The primary issue with that record is that she’s only really scored a few notable wins. Teen phenom (and one of many promising young Czech prospects in the women’s game) Sara Bejlek and Arantxa Rus (who’s been pretty poor on the whole in 2022). When tasked with someone comfortable on the surface and with a bit more pedigree, Navarro has struggled, losing to players like Simona Waltert and Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets.
Her game isn’t the more clay-centric, and the former collegiate star is certainly more used to hard courts and doesn’t play with much spin, doesn’t really have a weapon to hit through the surface from the baseline and while consistent, can still be error-prone for stretches.
Galfi, on the other hand, is pretty adept at playing on clay, has a bit more power to her game, but has really improved consistency wise the last year or two. It’s still something she’s working on (real defensive grinders like Sara Errani, Reka-Luka Jani and Despina Papamichail have given her fits this season). She’s more established than Navarro, is more comfortable and natural on the surface and has wins over the likes of Anna Bondar, Jasmine Paolini and the young Croatian sensation, Petra Marcinko on the dirt this year.
Dalma Galfi vs Emma Navarro Best Bet
When looking for bets, we always want to try and find a selection that isn’t priced up properly. Identifying why that may be is also key, and in this matchup, it’s clearly the incredible run on clay that Navarro has put together over the last few months.
The lack of real quality of competition, however, doesn’t appear to be taken into account nearly enough, and I’ll look to take advantage of that by backing the Hungarian in this one.
