Monday Tennis Best Bet: WTA French Open, Caroline Garcia vs Xiyu Wang

Caroline Garcia vs Xiyu Wang Best Bet: Monday, May 29th
What an incredibly close win for someone that at one point led 6-1, 3-1 and had a half chance for the double break lead in the second set. It’s nice to get those incredibly close wins, even if it should’ve been much less tense.
Onto Monday where we’ll begin our French Open main draw coverage. Let’s take a look at the opening round match between Caroline Garcia and Xiyu Wang.

It’s another match for Garcia in the betting markets that has her living off the reputation that her late-2022 form and run to the final in Lyon built.
The fact is, she hasn’t been that strong in 2023 on the whole.
She has lost repeatedly in the last several months as a favourite, oftentimes as a rather large one.
Donna Vekic, Sorana Cirstea (twice), Camila Osorio and Mayar Sherif have all managed to get by her as rather large underdogs.
What do most of them have in common? They have strong first serves and/or big groundstrokes from the baseline.
With Garcia struggling on return and refusing to back off her overly aggressive strategy on return, players with big games can keep her on the back foot and find relatively easy service holds.
Wang fits that bill pretty well.
She has a big first serve, can hit through her forehand, and can also throw in some more kick serves to keep her opposition out of rhythm. From the baseline she can also mix in topspin forehands which play well on higher-bouncing clay courts and aren’t as attackable.
Against opponents that tend to overhit and lack patience (like Garcia), that is another strong component to have to one’s game.
Wang’s improved form on clay in the last few seasons has impressed me enough to believe she’s far too much of an outsider in this matchup.

The 22-year-old has also put forth some relatively strong performances against decent players this year.
She beat Bianca Andreescu in a tough match in Madrid and took a set off of her compatriot Qinwen Zheng as a rather large underdog as well.
The fact is, I don’t think it’s just the overvaluation of Garcia that is presenting value in this match, but there’s also an undervaluation of Wang.
