When looking at this match, one really must ask, what is it that the Frenchwoman can do to keep things close with Martincova?

Outside of putting on a clinic on serve, Paquet is unlikely to trouble the Czech very much.

From the backhand wing to rally tolerance to athleticism to generating angles and even ability on the return of serve, Martincova holds large advantages over her opponent.

The abilities to move the ball around the court so well off both wings and hit with angles are particularly important in this one. With Paquet not being the best mover, not able to generate winners on the move and often leaving returns short when she can run balls down, those two matchup edges should serve Martincova really well.

The 27-year-old playing in her hometown event is capable of injecting pace into her forehands as well. If she’s able to get enough returns in play to start points and prolong most of them, the likelihood of her winning that point will vastly increase.

With that said, I’m going to back Martincova to cover the games handicap in this one.

Bookmakers and the markets have this one at -5 games at about 1.90 odds, but I don’t mind paying 10 cents to bring this down to -4.5 games at Bet365. While I rarely advocate doing so, in this position and that half-game being worth more than most, I’m liking that angle more.
