Monday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Toronto, Simona Halep vs Donna Vekic
Simona Halep vs Donna Vekic Best Bet: Monday, August 8th
As we shift into the final swing before the US Open at the end of August, there are a pair of big tuneup events for all the top players to get ready in a best-on-best format.
The first of the two is the National Bank Open, split between Toronto and Montreal, with the women in the former and the men in the latter for the 2022 edition.
Let’s dive into a match presenting some value from Monday’s slate on the WTA side of things, featuring one of the most decorated active players in Simona Halep and lucky loser, Donna Vekic.

Simona Halep vs Donna Vekic Preview
August 8th, 16:00 (UK Time)
It’s an interesting opener for the former world No. 1 in Halep, as she takes on the big-serving and big-hitting Vekic. Yet it’s not nearly as intimidating a proposition as it normally would be for a few reasons.
First and foremost, the 26-year-old from Osijek, Croatia has been working her way back from injury since March and hasn’t looked to really be near the level that saw her reach the top-20 in the past.
Secondly, and related to the first point, her fitness has been a concern to this point. She was never the most effective mover, but at the moment, it’s even more of a glaring weakness. Not exactly one you want to have against someone like Halep who makes you play a ton of balls, and works the ball around the court with the best of them.
Finally, Vekic has never been one to thrive in hot and humid conditions. As a resident Torontonian, let me tell you, it is not pleasant right now in the city. When you combine the lack of fitness with the inability to play long matches in these conditions, the prospects of an upset look slimmer and slimmer.
Finally, matchup-wise, Halep is a player that has added plenty of aggression and pace to her serve and forehand. Combined with excellent defensive play and ability to absorb and redirect pace, Halep matches up real well in this one with Vekic.
Simona Halep vs Donna Vekic Best Bet
One other thing to keep in the back of your mind. Vekic is coming off a match on Sunday against a much less talented player than Halep (Vekic was a strong favourite in that market) that she ended up losing. She lost in a lopsided third set, after two long sets. This really put a few things on display.
First, she’s clearly overvalued in the market. Second, the heat has been hitting her after a while on court. Finally, playing well over 2.5 hours in the heat on Sunday could really hamper her preparedness on Monday.
We can also feel more comfortable playing the higher games handicap with Halep, since we know in a potential third set – should it come to that – Vekic could very well be out of steam and see a lopsided number get the bet over the line.
This staking would normally be higher for me, but with Halep having struggled with the Washington heat last week (though it hasn’t been nearly as big of a deal for her historically as it has with Vekic), I’m going to take a more cautious approach.
