Monday Tennis Best Bet: WTA Washington, Harriet Dart vs Lin Zhu
Harriet Dart vs Lin Zhu Best Bet: Monday, August 1st
To August we go, with both tours shifting to North America and the hard courts for the month leading into the season’s final grand slam event from New York City.
The US Open gets going at the end of the month, and all the top players are set to fine tune their hard-court games over the coming weeks in preparation.
For Monday’s WTA selection, we go to the hard courts of the American capital in Washington, DC, as Harriet Dart takes on Lin Zhu.

At 26 years old, the 2022 season has been the best of Dart’s career. After qualifying for Indian Wells and making the fourth round, picking up massive upsets along the way (at least according to the betting markets), Dart reached a pair of quarterfinals during the grass season and pushed Jessica Pegula to three sets at Wimbledon in the second round.
Her game has become much more well-rounded this season, adding far more consistency. She has become a strong counter-puncher, with the ability to flatten out her groundstrokes from both wings and create angles that take even more time away from her opposition.
Deciding to skip the clay events the past few weeks (she’s much more of a quicker-court player and struggles on the red dirt) was likely the right choice and she’ll go right from Wimbledon to the medium-quick courts of Washington.
With Zhu also a hard courter, Dart should be tested in this one. Zhu is also a relatively flat hitter and can act as a gatekeeper of sorts at the lower levels of the WTA Tour, being very consistent and punishing those who commit too many unforced errors.
This time last year, I likely would’ve passed in this spot. With Dart’s added consistency, ability to dictate points and hit upwards of five or six balls in rallies if needed to open up the space to hit winners, I’m liking her chances here and believe she should be the favourite.

As alluded to above, this match being lined as a near pick ‘em has me believing there is some solid value in backing the Brit here.
With a bit more power to her game, more consistency than years past, the preference for quicker courts and a style that won’t be bothered by flat hitting, considering she can also play that game and both play a flat style herself, while also being an effective counter-puncher, I have her a favourite here over Zhu.
There are never any guarantees in this industry, but her improvements in 2022 and much better game are deserving of more respect.
