ATP Gstaad BEST BET: Bergs vs Hanfmann
Monday, July 18th, 9:00 UK Time
With a new week comes new tournaments on the ATP Tour and this week, the men are off to the small resort town of Gstaad in Switzerland, as well as Hamburg, Germany for a 500-level event.
For Monday’s selection, it’s an early tilt from Gstaad between Yannick Hanfmann and the fun-to-watch Zizou Bergs, as they vie for a spot in the main draw.
Something to keep in mind for the week ahead, this tournament is played up in the Swiss alps and at over 1,000 metres of altitude. With the thin air, the stronger servers and bigger hitters are going to have a bit of an advantage with a bit more pace behind their shots.
Enter Hanfmann – the German standing 1.93 metres tall with a huge serve. The 30-year-old has taken advantage of these kinds of conditions before, reaching the final here in 2017 and the final in Kitzbuhel (another clay event played at altitude) in 2020. With a massive serve and strong forehand that only become even tougher to return in altitude, the out-of-form Karlsruhe native is in a position to turn things around this week at an event he’s found success at before.
With the ability to play with topspin and not only ensure his groundstrokes have pace, but are also heavy to return, the quicker conditions paired with clay courts are ideal.
As for Bergs, the 23-year-old Belgian certainly has electrifying talent. Like many players that can fire sizzling forehands and make incredible shots, however, he often struggles with maintaining his top level.
It’s no wonder that seven of his 12 matches on clay this season (not including league matches that don’t award rankings points) have gone three sets (with an eighth going to 23 games in two sets). The streaky play lends itself to longer matches as the peaks and valleys come to fruition.
For me this one is a neck-and-neck tie, with Hanfmann showing some value at well over evens. Furthermore, Bergs has very little experience on clay at altitude and not much success in the events he has played. Between the match looking like a rather tight affair, and Hanfmann having more experience and success in the conditions, I’ll be backing the underdog to turn his poor run of form around in Switzerland.
