ATP Stuttgart Open Best Bet: Otte vs Altmeier

Monday, June 6th, 11:30 UK Time

For the ATP selection on Monday, it’s off to Stuttgart, where a pair of Germans will square off on home soil to open up their respective grass seasons.

With both men possessing potent first serves and being rather tall, this one could very well come down to the player that does end up taking the chances that they create for themselves on return. It’s very possible those opportunities will be scarce, so the ability to take advantage will be key.

The elder of the two is the more likely player to do just that for a few reasons.

Oscar Otte not only has a first serve that is as or more effective than Daniel Altmaier’s, but his game is much more well-rounded as well. His big groundstrokes and decent movement give his game surface versatility that allows him to succeed in just about any environment. When playing consistent tennis, Otte has been able to compete with the absolute best players on tour.

Altmaier on the other hand has a few characteristics to his game that make him far more effective on clay courts than other surfaces. His second serve is reliant on spin to ensure opponents can’t attack it, which is much less effective on hard and grass courts. Even on slower, higher bouncing hard courts in Mexico, that second serve was sitting up and far too attackable.

Secondly, Altmaier plays with a one-handed backhand – a stroke that generally takes more time to set up than the traditional two-handed variety. That can be a major weakness on grass, where opponents can rush that wing, induce errors, and find cheaper points. It’s also much tougher to return serves that come to that wing. With Otte possessing a fast first serve and a surface that will help accentuate that pace, should he target the backhand with his serves, Altmaier is going to find it very difficult to generate break point chances.

From talent to career success, to match up, Otte is the far more likely player of the two to find success in front of the home crowd.

  • Selection: Otte -3 games
  • Odds: 1.89 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10
