Coming off a strong week in Birmingham, Sorana Cirstea looks to avenge a loss earlier in the season to Anhelina Kalinina in Australia, as the two square off in the first round in Eastbourne.

As one of the bigger grass tuneup events on the WTA calendar during the quick grass season, Eastbourne provides Cirstea the chance to continue to build form against strong competition, while it gives Kalinina at least one more match to find some comfort on the grass courts.

While I’m normally a big fan of Kalinina’s game, this portion of the calendar isn’t particularly kind to her.

Grass hasn’t been her best surface, and this year has been no different, with the Ukrainian posting a 1-2 record and needing three sets to beat Australian youngster Olivia Gadecki in her lone win. Her two losses to tour-level competition were each by a total of six games to Russians Daria Kasatkina and Ekaterina Alexandrova.

The struggles make sense, as well. She doesn’t have overpowering power to her game and she isn’t particularly adept at slicing or drop shotting. Factoring in that moving on grass courts is also its own challenge and it’s clear Kalinina isn’t at home on these courts.

Cirstea, on the other hand, is coming off a strong week in which she beat two big servers in Shelby Rogers and Donna Vekic and handled a player with tricky variety in Aleksandra Krunic with ease, before falling in a third-set tiebreak to quick-court specialist Shuai Zhang. With a big serve and groundstrokes of her own, the grass really accentuates her power and allows her to dictate her fair share of points.

With the Ukrainian’s hold plus break percentage below 90% over the last 52 weeks on grass and Cirstea boasting a mark of over 100% in that category, we see a clear statistical edge for the Romanian here as well.

Form, style, stats and comfort on the surface all favour Cirstea, so I’m happy to back her to continue her impressive start to the grass-court season.
