Paula Badosa vs Anna Lena Friedsam Best Bet: Wednesday, May 10th

The scoreline may have looked like those bets came easy, but that was a pretty messy win from Camila Osorio. It took eight match points to get over the line, but we’ll take the win and be happy with the analysis that even when she wasn’t at her best, she won by a five-game margin.

For Wednesday, let’s take a look at the match between Paula Badosa and Tereza Martincova.

Paula Badosa vs Anna Lena Friedsam Preview

May 10th, 18:00 (UK Time)

Another tournament and another tough draw for Badosa in Rome, as she is set to face the No. 4 seed, Ons Jabeur, if she comes through this tilt in the second round.

It’s been rough sledding in that regard, as Badosa should probably be considered an elite player on the WTA Tour in her own right, considering the fact she has pushed some really strong players this year and has absolutely dominated much of the lower-tier competition she has played.

With a big serve, powerful baseline game and comfort across just about every service, it isn’t hard to see why so many believe the 25-year-old’s ranking of No. 35 doesn’t reflect her abilities.

She has another chance to prove her chops in this one, as she takes on Friedsam, who came through the qualifying draw to earn her spot in the first round.

While the German does have a decent first serve, her game is more suited to indoor hard courts, as her movement can be a liability, she doesn’t play with a whole lot of topspin, and her game lacks the dynamism that one normally needs to succeed on clay courts.

Her 5-2 record on the year looks pretty decent, but with wins over Simona Waltert, Moyuka Uchijima (x2), Asia Muhammad and Liv Hovde, it’s hard to give her any credit – especially as she gets set to take on someone of Badosa’s talent.

Paula Badosa vs Anna Lena Friedsam Best Bet

With Badosa being priced to win here in the 1.15 odds range, I think the value here is for her to get this one done in relatively quick fashion.

Friedsam just doesn’t possess anything but a serve that plays particularly well on red clay, and even that serve will have some of its effectiveness chewed up by the slower courts.

As I wrote in the last preview where I backed Badosa to succeed (which lost), it has taken a high level of player to beat her in 2023. Even that match was against a top-tier player in Maria Sakkari.

Against a more middling talent off her favourite surface and coming off a relatively uninspiring qualifying campaign, I’m happy to back Badosa to get things done in relatively routine fashion once more.
