Back-to-back days with selections from the women’s side of the event that looked pretty bad in the early stages and ended up coming through. Nice to see some of those marginal results coming back! Qinwen Zheng got off to an incredibly slow start (perhaps due to it being her first match in a few weeks), but shredded Irina Begu 6-1, 6-1 in the second and third sets to cover the handicap.
For Friday, we’ll round out the week with another second-round preview, this one in the match between Petra Kvitova and Linda Noskova.

It’s a matchup of two Czechs from different generations, as the elder of the two, and multiple-time grand slam champion in Kvitova takes on one of the many emerging stars on the WTA Tour that hail from the central European country in Noskova.
The 33-year-old has a very straightforward game, founded on a big left-handed first serve, as well as an aggressive game from the baseline. With that comes the risk of unforced errors, and it’s why the elder stateswoman of the matchup has found most of her success in quicker environments. The shorter the points are, the less likely she is to commit said errors.
Noskova’s game possesses a decent amount of power in its own right. It isn’t as eye-catching as her countrywoman’s but she can certainly dictate and when she lands her first serve, she isn’t keen on relenting control.
She’s also the more athletic of the two players, doesn’t mind playing in slower and hot conditions, and might have a bit more variety to her game.
If she can extend rallies here, she should be in good shape. Not only will that increase the chances of her finding more points through Kvitova’s mistakes, but it could also fatigue her counterpart, who has been known to struggle in hot and humid conditions in the past.

I think we’re seeing a slight overvaluation here on the veteran, considering she did win several matches in Indian Wells – despite the conditions not being the ones that she’d normally thrive in.
Her win against Jelena Ostapenko came from 0-6 down in a match the Latvian appeared to tank until late in the deciding set, while the Jessica Pegula match was of incredibly poor quality, with the American just being a little worse than her.
Taking on a youngster with the game to stick with her in conditions that typically wear her down, I’m happy to oppose an overvalued Kvitova in this spot.
