Well not a good end to the week at all, as Linda Noskova packed it in mentally in the second set. She simply couldn’t hold Petra Kvitova back from beating up on her second serves.
For Monday’s best bet from the women’s side of things, I want to take a closer look at the match featuring Qinwen Zheng and Anastasia Potapova.

Two burgeoning talents going toe-to-toe in this one with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
With both women able to dial up the power from the baseline, this one should produce some incredibly entertaining tennis.
For my money, however, Zheng should be a shorter favourite in this situation against Potapova for a few reasons.
First, the discrepancy between their serves is fairly pronounced. Zheng generates far more free and cheap points with her serve, as Potapova has yet to find the power she has in baseline exchanges on her serve. That is borne out in the stats, as Zheng has a hold rate over 15% higher in 2023, while her ace rate is in the 11.5% range, whereas her Russian opponent is below 3% in that department.
The second thing that sets Zheng apart here is that she’s just played far more at the highest levels of the game, and while she is more talented, she’s also had more experience in bigger tournaments.
Consider the women that have beaten each of these two so far in 2023. Zheng has lost to the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Liudmilla Samsonova, Maria Sakkari and Bernarda Pera. With the exception of the last name on that list, all the others are top-20 players and strong on hard courts.
Contrast that with Potapova’s losses to the likes of Maryna Zanevska, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Katie Volynets and Katerina Siniakova, and you can start to put together that these two aren’t exactly in the the same tier at the moment on the WTA Tour.

I don’t think that the market has put enough weight on the fact that there is still a talent difference between these two, or Zheng consistently plays tougher opponents, while still maintaining an impressive win rate.
Throw in the fact that she is far more likely to consistently apply pressure on return, and I have her price closer to the 1.57 range than the 1.75 we’re seeing at the moment.
