Rebecca Peterson vs Caroline Dolehide Best Bet: Tuesday, March 7th

That match was won by Olga Danilovic in the only way it feels like it could’ve been won by her. After being down 3-5 early on, the Serbian young gun won five straight games to win the first set and take an early lead in the second. From there, she lost seven straight games to lose the second and fall behind in the decider. In the end, however, she did manage to gut out the 6-4 win in the third to cash the bet.

Onto Tuesday, where we’ll preview the match taking place between Rebecca Peterson and Caroline Dolehide for a place in the main draw at Tennis Paradise.

Rebecca Peterson vs Caroline Dolehide Preview

March 7th, 20:30 (UK Time)

It’s good to see Peterson back playing in top form after a long stretch of injuries and poor play affected by said injuries.

The 27-year-old Swede has had a strong start to 2023, posting an 11-3 record and reaching the final of the Merida 250 WTA event a few weeks ago as a qualifier. She had wins over Alycia Parks, Magda Linette and Caty McNally along the way as well, so it wasn’t the weakest of 250 fields, either.

Her strong serve and the ability to dictate on her forehand wing provide her with a solid foundation, but the ability to move the ball around the court and then hit the forehand down the line, inside out, inside in, or wherever her opponent doesn’t happen to be on the court really makes her a tough out on hard courts.

Her baseline play is also rather solid, and she doesn’t stick out as a terrific mover, but it’s certainly not a liability either. Having the ability to pick up cheap points, combined with that solidity is what makes her a top-50 talent when she’s healthy (her career high is 43rd).

What sets her apart from her American opponent though is her endurance. Not only does she possess a more well-rounded game than Dolehide, but I think she’s more suited to grinding out a lengthy match on the slow courts of Indian Wells that tend to produce longer rallies, and thus, longer matches (even if they end in straight sets).

With Dolehide being a capable server, but then being at a clear disadvantage from the baseline, I’m not sure that her serve is quite big enough to offset Peterson’s edges in other departments.

Given the conditions, I think Peterson should probably be a larger favourite here.

Between the overvaluation on Dolehide thanks to some of the scorelines she posted in elevated conditions in Monterrey – where her strong serve was far more potent and relevant to a handicap – and the matchup advantages in this one for Peterson, I’m happy to give up the three-game head start.

While the 1.85 odds are a tad steep for a typical games handicap, I have this one priced at -4 (oddly enough the number their last meeting landed on in favour of Peterson, though head-to-head is not the be-all-end-all many make it out to be) in the 1.90 range. With that being a fairly big jump for only five cents on the dollar, I’m happy to take a decent-sized stake here.

  • Selection: Peterson -3 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.88 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 1:00 pm on March 7th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
