WTA Lausanne BEST BET: Danilovic vs Potapova
Saturday, July 16th, Time TBD
Well, we look to get out of the recent rut on our selections, with a few close losses on Thursday, and then an error-prone Trevisan costing us a play on Thursday.
To do so, it’s off to Lausanne, Switzerland for a match between two extremely talented, if not volatile players, in Olga Danilovic and Anastasia Potapova.
With both these women able to produce some electrifying groundstrokes – especially off the forehand wing – expect a match chock-full of winners (as well as unforced errors).
There are a few reasons to like the Russian in this match, though. For starters, Potapova has found herself in a much more consistent groove this week than Danilovic. The 21-year-old from Saratov has dropped just a single set this week (in her first match) and hasn’t been extended past 10 games in any of the six sets she’s won.
Contrast that with Danilovic, who’s won her last two matches in three sets and trailed in each of the deciders (1-4 and 4-5* against Anna Kalinskaya and 2-5 against Simona Waltert). While there’s something to be said about tenacity, Danilovic has played with fire this week and hasn’t been nearly as convincing.
That also means the Serbian has spent more time on court (she’s also played two extra matches, coming through the qualifying draw) by over three hours.
In terms of the stylistic matchup, the two are very similar. Despite Potapova being right-handed and Danilovic a southpaw, both possess strong first serves and can absolutely crunch the ball with their forehands. Neither has a particularly reliable backhand and both can play an all-or-nothing brand of tennis.
While Danilovic has played more in her career on the dirt, it’s actually her Russian counterpart that has the higher elo rating (a metric that evaluates results and takes into consideration quality of competition) on the surface.
Even with the tough opposition, Potapova holds a whopping 18.1% lead in terms of hold plus break percentage on clay at tour level over the last 52 weeks.
Whether it’s form on the weak, being the fresher player or the statistical edge here, while playing a similar brand of tennis, I’m siding with Potapova to move on to her second clay-court final of the 2022 season.
- Selection: Potapova -3.5 games
