The women’s selection for Saturday’s third-round action comes from a match featuring world No. 4 Paula Badosa and one of the best women to ever play on grass courts in Petra Kvitova.
Despite this match being a rather lopsided affair, the markets have Kvitova priced up as a slight favourite.
We’ll look to take advantage, by backing the Czech here in this position.
Already a two-time Wimbledon champion, Kvitova’s game on grass is nearly unstoppable when she is on (spoiler: she is on, but more on that in a minute). Her massive serve and forehand are both loaded with pace. The fact she’s left-handed also affords her the chance to pull opponents off the court with well-placed serves out wide, opening up the rest of the court for her next ball.
Badosa has a strong, well-rounded game, but doesn’t do anything exceptionally well. The first serve is certainly of decent quality and her consistency can propel her to success if her opponent is off, but she is a rather streaky player.
What’s more concerning, though, is her career on grass has been lacklustre, to say the least. Last year’s run to the second week didn’t feature any particularly difficult test, her first two rounds at The Championships this year have been cakewalks and prior to 2021, the vast majority of her wins came in the qualifying draws.
She’s also never really beaten anyone on the surface whose game is power-focused, which is a big concern when playing an experienced and very powerful Kvitova.
In terms of form, the difference between the two is start. Kvitova enters on a seven-match win streak, dropping just two sets along the way. Her serve has been broken just seven times in those seven matches and she’s won an astounding 87.8% of her service games on grass in the last 52 weeks (with incredible first and second serve win rates of 73.8% and 58.8%, respectively as well).
She also holds a lead of well over 100 points in grass elo over her Spanish opponent, which makes her a significant favourite in my books.
