Incredible stakes for both Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud on Sunday in New York City. Not only will the winner make history with their first ever grand slam title, but they’ll also leave the Big Apple as the top-ranked tennis player in the men’s game.
Let’s dive a bit more into this matchup, as our final selection of the U.S. Open draws closer.
In this article:
September 11th, 21:00 UK Time
As the lead-in tournaments played out over the last month or so, it didn’t appear to me that Alcaraz was ready to be crowned a grand slam champion. The unforced error counts, lack of point construction at times and a serve that can be attackable were all evident. I was totally, and unequivocally, incorrect.
Despite these things, Alcaraz finds himself an overwhelming favourite in Sunday’s final. The scary thing about this situation? He’s on the verge of being the youngest No. 1 player we’ve seen in quite some time and a champion on one of the biggest stages in the sport and he’s still got decades left and several areas in which he can improve.
The defending and athleticism have legitimately seen highlights go viral on Twitter match after match this fortnight and I wouldn’t expect anything less in this final.
As for Ruud, his game is a lot less flashy, but he’s also earned the right to be named the sport’s top player should he find a way to upset the apple cart in the final.
His game is predicated on a strong (and much-improved) service game, a big forehand that also plays with spin and a backhand that isn’t a weapon but can keep him in rallies (also much-improved in that it’s much less attackable).
The question will be whether he can find a way to hit through Alcaraz without becoming too error-prone and getting away from his game.
Despite having played three consecutive five-hour matches and spending as much time on court to reach the final as anyone ever has at the U.S. Open, the durability questions simply aren’t there with Alcaraz. Must be nice to be 19 and already the most fit and athletic player on tour!
With Alcaraz possessing the ability to dictate, athleticism to deal with Ruud’s tactical play and a seemingly endless energy reserve, I’m backing him to take down the first of many grand slam titles on Sunday.
Odds as at 1:30 pm on September 11th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
