ATP Wimbledon BEST BET: DJOKOVIC vs KYRGIOS

Sunday, July 10th, 15:00 UK Time

With the women’s final all wrapped up, attention shifts to an absolute blockbuster of a men’s final set for Sunday afternoon from SW19.

Novak Djokovic has one final hurdle to clear to lock up his 21st title at a grand slam event, while Kyrgios looks to silence his critics once and for all by winning his maiden title at such a prestigious event in singles (he picked up a doubles title on home soil earlier in 2022 with fellow Aussie, and his good friend, Thanasi Kokkinakis).

After laying claim to being among the sport’s top-5 or top-10 players on the seldom-used grass courts, Kyrgios has backed those words up in a big way. When he’s on his game mentally, he’s not wrong either. He has one of the sport’s biggest serves, a monster forehand and a rock-solid backhand that can also be used in an attacking manner. What’s more, on a quick surface where opponents can rush you with big serves and groundstrokes, Kyrgios’ windup on that wing is very compact, giving him more time than most to set up his shots on the backhand side. Athletically, the 27-year-old moves very well for someone his size and his hands are excellent – key on grass courts, where playing at the net is so important.

His game is so well-rounded, lacks any glaring weaknesses and has several elite weapons.

For my money, he shouldn’t be over 4.00 odds in the betting markets against anyone – including one of the greatest players to ever step foot on a tennis court in Djokovic.

The Serbian’s game needs no introduction. His first serve has vastly improved in the past few seasons and he’s likely the greatest athlete to play the game. He has one of the best backhands tennis has ever seen, the ball retrieval and shotmaking skills envied across the tennis world and an incredible ability to create the acute angles that can win so many points from neutral positions.

While the legend is right favoured to win the match – especially in a longer, best-of-five sets format – I think the odds are a tad disrespectful to his challenger. Kyrgios is now 12-2 on the grass-court season, with losses to another big server in Hubert Hurkacz (three sets and two went to a tiebreak) and another grass great in Andy Murray in Stuttgart (first set tiebreak, before a mental meltdown led to being dominated in the second).

I’ll be looking to back Kyrgios to keep it close by backing the game total to go over (if you have the option for over 3.5 sets, that is also an intriguing option).

  • Selection: Over 39 games
  • Odds: 1.90 (Marathon Bet)
