Renata Zarazua vs Jule Niemeier (Australian Open) Free Pick: Market Has Wrong Woman Favoured to Advance
- Pick: Niemeier to win
- Best Odds: 2.25
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stakes: 3/10
Odds as at 4:00 am UK Time on January 10th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
Her serve has improved, which has led to more hard court success, but she’s still lacked wins against strong competition and her abilities in baseline exchanges still leave much to be desired on the surface.
Niemeier has had her problems with inconsistent play and unforced errors, but she does possess a powerful game and was a top-75 player in the world for a reason.

Renata Zarazua Recent Form
Looking at the Mexican’s hard court form, we can see a win in her opening round here against Aussie Jaimee Fourlis, and then a few lacklustre results.
Last season, she did manage to pick up some nice results at the ITF level in the United States, though there weren’t many wins against strong opposition and she lost her last three matches on hard courts she played (losing to two decent players in lopsided fashion and to a young player that has struggled to gain traction on tour).
Just last week she lost as a big favourite to another Australian that was able to play in the Canberra 125K thanks to being on home soil.
Despite a few good tournaments on hard courts, I’m not sold on her ability overall on the surface and her lack of power on the forehand and backhand wings is a concern as well.
Jule Niemeier Recent Form
It’s been a rough year or so for Niemeier, who went just 3-14 on outdoor hard courts in 2023, as she simply could not keep the ball in the court, despite being able to dictate play against most opponents.
In fact, a win in this match and she’ll have won as many matches on an outdoor hard court in 2024 as she did all of last year before we reach the midway point of the first month of the season!
The fact is, she’s one of the players that should benefit most from an offseason to clear her head and get back on track.
Her game consists of an imposing brand of power tennis and she has a strong serve, forehand and when she gets to the net is fairly capable with her volleys as well.
It comes down to the unforced error count, and one has to think that there’s a mental component to that. An offseason away from the game can do wonders to put the struggles behind a player and help them turn the page.
Renata Zarazua vs Jule Niemeier H2H – Stat of the Match
No previous meetings between these two.
One would think that if Zarazua had her way, this match would be on clay. She may be the favourite in the betting markets for this match, but I don’t think she’s the better hard courter by any stretch.
Zizou Bergs vs Joris de Loore (Australian Open) Free Pick: Younger Belgian to Prove Too Much for His Compatriot
- Pick: Bergs -2.5 games
- Best Odds: 1.92
- Bookmaker: Pinnacle
- Stakes: 4/10
Odds as at 4:00 am UK Time on January 10th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
Give me Bergs in the all-Belgian contest for a spot in the final qualifying round.
After a slow start to the year, Bergs cruised through his opening match, and showed just how good he can be, even on a quicker court, where returning is a much tougher task.
He has excellent hands, plenty of power in his groundstrokes and moves around the court fairly efficiently.
While de Loore is a capable server and ball striker, he lack the dynamism that his fellow Belgian possesses.

Zizou Bergs Recent Form
It feels like deja vu with Bergs to this time last year.
First event of the season (United Cup in 2023, Nonthaburi Challenger this year) ends in disaster, before the ultra-talented 24-year-old turns it on in time for the Happy Slam.
A year ago he managed to come through the qualifying draw, and his first round match this season was an absolute beatdown of Czech clay courter Zdenek Kolar.
Now he takes on his countryman in a match that should see its fair share of big first serves and plus-one forehands.
That said, there’s no question that Bergs is more athletic and is much more capable on return as well.
I don’t mind taking him to win this match by what amounts to a one-break margin.
Joris de Loore Recent Form
The 2023 campaign was a big one for the now 30-year-old.
He wasn’t even ranked high enough to enter the qualifying draw in Melbourne a year ago, but used this time to head to Portugal and win the first of two Oeiras Challenger tournaments as a qualifier and then reach the final of the second event the next week.
From there, he went on to reach two more Challenger finals and another pair of semis on top of that.
I’m a fan of his resurgence and think his first-strike tennis can help him take out less talented opposition on quicker courts.
This match may be a bit too much to handle, however.
Zizou Bergs vs Joris de Loore H2H – Stat of the Match
The elder of the two has the lone win in this rivalry, though needless to say, a win from almost nine years ago (when Bergs was a junior) on clay means absolutely nothing when it comes to this match.
De Loore will have to hope he can replicate what he’s managed to do in four of his five sets this season and drag a set or two into a tiebreak, where the result could be determined by a stroke of luck and is much more favourable to the underdog.
