Tamara Zidansek vs Anna Bondar Best Bet: Thursday, September 22nd

Anna Bondar comes through again against Simona Waltert (though not without having her issues along the way) to bring us another winner from the women’s selections this week.

For Thursday’s choice? We’re going right back to Budapest….and right back to a match featuring Bondar! For some reason, it appears as though bookmakers struggle to price up her matches properly, whether that’s overvaluing her, or undervaluing her abilities.

This time around, she takes on Tamara Zidansek in the quarterfinal round, and it’ll be a much sterner test than she’s seen earlier in the week (especially considering Elisabetta Cocciaretto failed to show up in the first round).

After a few impressive wins – oddly enough, her match as an underdog was a breeze, while her match as a favourite was a much tougher job to get done – Bondar now takes on one of the better clay courters remaining in the draw in Zidansek.

The Slovenian hasn’t had the most impressive 2022 season, even on her preferred red dirt courts, but she’s still a tough out. In fact, this is the first time she’s won two matches at an event on clay this season (she reached the third round at the French Open, but received a walkover along the way). Nevertheless, she’s advanced to this point without dropping a set, and beat Jule Niemeier as a sizable underdog along the way.

She also matches up decently with the Hungarian, who looked underwhelming against the young Waltert in the second round. Bondar has a decent first serve and groundstrokes, but doesn’t possess the power to hit through Zidansek, and can also settle into being too passive far more often.

At many points throughout the three sets on Wednesday, Waltert was able to dictate, especially from the backhand wing, where she was able to pull Bondar off the court often and force plenty of defensive shots that landed short. Waltert’s main problem was that she played far too many flat balls that made their way into the net.

Zidansek has far more experience than Waltert, more pedigree at the WTA level, is also on her preferred surface, can do the same thing but on her forehand, and understands when she needs to play with more topspin – incorporating more margin for error into her game.

Tamara Zidansek vs Anna Bondar Best Bet

All in all, I think it’s been a strong week for Bondar. In fact, considering the opponents she played, I certainly believed that she was being disrespected in the betting markets to a certain extent.

This time around, however, it appears that the books have gone the other way. I don’t think she should be a massive underdog in this spot, but making her a pick ‘em or even slight dog against someone like Zidansek is affording her too much respect.

I’ll back the Slovenian who’s found her rhythm this week at an eminently winnable event for her.
