We have what could be a fun – and one of the day’s most entertaining – matches, featuring the always-fiery Yulia Putintseva and the burgeoning youngster Diane Parry.

In a matchup between two women with similar styles, the more experienced of the two – Putintseva – is being given the edge in the betting markets. While this isn’t necessarily wrong, the extent to which she’s considered the favourite has gone a bit overboard.

Her opponent from the south of France is one of the better young clay courters in the women’s game, and she showcased her potential in her first-round match against American Lauren Davis.

With a smooth one-handed backhand (a rarity in the modern game), the ability to move the ball back and forth with precision and a forehand that can really dictate play, Parry has all the tools necessary to succeed on the red dirt.

Further, her defensive prowess and ball retrieval skills are also strengths at a relatively young age.

While Putintseva has a similar game, being able to prolong points, yet attack when the opportunity presents itself, it’s tough to say she’s leagues ahead of her young opponent. We saw how well Parry deals with players that don’t have a big weapon last round, where she was able to hang in the longer rallies but put points away far more proficiently.

With a total of just 20.5 games (I’d have it closer to 21.5 myself) and the 1X2 market indicating this should be a straightforward affair, I’m going to stake a position backing the underdog here to keep things much closer than the odds would indicate.
