As The Championships from Wimbledon approach, these lead-in tournaments require a bit more caution as some players may not see the minimal prize money or points on offer worth playing a long week leading into a major tournament.

That’s why the match from Bad Homburg featuring Daria Kasatkina and Bianca Andreescu is the right one to take on.

First, there is value to be had in backing the Russian. Second, with Kasatkina being banned from next week’s event, there is no doubting her motivation in this one, while Andreescu could also use some good form entering the year’s third grand slam.

For my money, Kasatkina is the best play of the day from the WTA events.

While Andreescu’s well-rounded game and aggressive style can translate surfaces, I’m not convinced she has the level just yet to beat Kasatkina.

Her wins over Martina Trevisan and Katie Swan were impressive, but the level of play from either one on grass doesn’t approach the level she’ll be seeing from Kasatkina. In her lone match against high-end talent, Andreescu played incredible tennis and still lost. The Canadian’s penchant for poor decision-making and bouts of erratic play can plague her within a match, and against someone as consistent and that makes as many balls as Kasatkina, that’s a horrible matchup problem to have.

As for Kasatkina, her form on the grass has been downright scintillating since last year. Having worked on her first serve to add more dynamism to her game, she’s seen her hold plus break percentage rate balloon to 114.5%, up several percentage points on her career number.

With a strong first serve, ability to move well and a rock-solid game from the baseline, Kasatkina has worked her way into the upper echelons of the women’s game – even on a surface that typically rewards a bigger game than she possesses.

With the ability to break players several times a set, and Andreescu possessing a strong, but not dominant serve, Kasatkina could pour the pressure on.

  • Selection: Kasatkina to win
  • Odds: 1.81 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds are valid as of 09:00 am on 23rd June 2022. Odds may now differ.
