The second round in Lausanne, Switzerland wraps up on Thursday and our selection for the day from the two women’s events comes from the match between Olga Danilovic and Anna Kalinskaya.
In what should be an entertaining match between two solid young players, I’ll be backing the underdog to emerge with the win in this one.
While Danilovic is likely the player more comfortable on the red dirt, her lack of consistency poses a huge problem against her Russian opponent.Kalinskaya plays with an incredible combination of consistency and sneaky power from the baseline, and moves well enough to track down some of the bigger forehands that will be coming her way.
The slight altitude in Lausanne also benefits the 23-year-old more, as the pace on her serve and groundstrokes should help her find a few more easy points.
The southpaw also has a decent serve, but will find it tougher against a decent returner in Kalinskaya. Her 12-5 record on the clay this year is impressive, but looking over the matches she has managed to win, the best player she’s played to this point and beaten is Dalma Galfi.
With rather lopsided losses to the likes of Irina Bara, Jil Teichmann and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, it’s a bit of a stretch to say she deserves to be the favourite in this match against someone of Kalinskaya’s calibre, by my estimation.
With both players capable of playing some fantastic tennis, I’ll side with the player that can produce it for longer stretches and does it more often – especially when offered odds over evens.
