WTA Wimbledon BEST BET: CORNET vs LIU
Thursday, June 30th, TBD
For the women’s selection on the final day of second-round action, we’re going to break down the match between the veteran Alize Cornet and youngster Claire Liu.
The Frenchwoman is a rather decisive favourite to advance to the third round in London, but have the bookmakers and betting markets priced this one up properly?
First up, let’s take a look at the Frenchwoman’s strengths. Her rally tolerance and ability to defend – even on grass courts – are strong attributes in her game. When she flattens out her backhand, it’s also a strong weapon. Finally, she plays with excellent variety and knows when to employ certain shots (just as important as being able to hit them).
As for Liu, she possesses the better (and more traditional for grass courts) powerful game of the two. She’s also worked on her movement over the last five to six seasons and her rally tolerance – which is what kept her from making her way to the WTA Tour for a few seasons – has drastically improved.
From a head-to-head standpoint (not in previous matches, but in playing style), Liu seems well-equipped to deal with what Cornet can throw at her. While not being an elite mover, she covers the court well, which should allow her to deal with the variety of Cornet. The American is also the more likely of the two to earn free points behind her serve.
The depth also doesn’t bother Liu, who’s comfortable in baseline exchanges, and has learned to be patient with deep balls from her opponent and to wait for shorter, more attackable balls to unleash that powerful forehand that can also find decent angles. We saw that in her last match against Parrizas-Diaz, who can hit with a tad more pace than Cornet and find the back corners of the court with consistency. Despite Parrizas-Diaz playing at a high level and giving her problems, Liu was able to take care of her serve enough to keep her in each set, and ultimately won the match in straights.
Finally, despite the pedigree and experience favouring Cornet, when it comes to wins and quality of competition, these two are neck-and-neck in grass elo ratings. Just four points separate them and they are side-by-side in the rankings.
For a matchup that seems fairly even, and with certain metrics agreeing with that assessment, I don’t think either woman should be viewed as the dominant favourite in this match. The over games and Liu to win markets are both enticing in this one.
- Selection: Liu to win
- Odds: 2.77 (Pinnacle)
