ATP Miami Open: Bedene vs Humbert Best Bet
Thursday, March 24th, 15:00 (UK Time)
The Miami Open is now in full flow, with the seeded players in the Women’s draw ready to make their tournament bow. Meanwhile, the ATP event is still at the first-round stage, and my best bet comes from one of those matches scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Ugo Humbert started the year in the best possible manner, defeating Daniil Medvedev in three sets at the ATP Cup. However, since then it has been a nightmare season for the Frenchman. That memorable victory against the World number two remains his only one of 2022.
In Indian Wells, Humbert’s confidence probably hit an all-time low after he comfortably lost to talented qualifier Holger Rune in straight sets. Humbert won just five games in the match and didn’t generate a single break point opportunity. It represented his sixth consecutive defeat, and he will be desperate to end that run in Miami.
His opponent in Round 1 is Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, whose struggle with injuries and Covid-19 has prevented him from playing any competitive tennis lately. Bedene’s defeat to Kamil Majchrzak last week was his first match in eight months. There were clear signs of rustiness in the first set where Bedene, usually dependable on serve, only won 38% of his service points. This figure significantly improved in the second set, with the 32-year-old winning 64% of points on serve, including an impressive 95% behind his first serve.
If Bedene can serve well early on in this match, his confidence levels will increase, and he can therefore cause a fragile Humbert some problems. The 23-year-old Frenchman hasn’t won a match in straight sets since August, so I think there is value in backing Bedene with a 1.5 set handicap in his favour at just above evens.
