We’re getting down to the business end of the final grand slam event of the year. With just Iga Swiatek remaining as a prior champion at one of the sport’s four biggest events, there’s a strong chance that come Saturday, a first-time grand slam champion in singles will be crowned.
Let’s take a look at two of those aspiring women that square off for a spot in the final four in Caroline Garcia and Coco Gauff.
In this article:
September 7th, 00:00 UK Time
It’s a marquee matchup on Ashe to open the night session, as the American teen sensation will look to halt the sizzling form of Garcia.
With the crowd firmly on her side, as it was against Shuai Zhang in her last match, Gauff will look to advance to her second ever grand slam semifinal and second of 2022 (she was also the finalist at Roland Garros).
Considering the Frenchwoman’s run of form (a trio of titles and a 30-4 record since late June) and her game suiting quicker conditions well, it’ll be a tough task for Gauff.
With a massive serve and forehand, Garcia had climbed as high as No. 5 in the world a few years ago. Unable to hone in the power on her shots for even short amounts of time, however, soon saw her plunge in the rankings. Now, with the consistency to go with the power and a high-risk, high-reward approach on return (she stands on the baseline to return first serves – not a very common tactic), she’s nearly unstoppable this summer.
With Gauff’s second serve being somewhat attackable, that risky manner of returning may just pay dividends for Garcia.
Finally, in terms of matchup, there isn’t much between these women in terms of potency of the first serve or net game, but the forehand wing is as lopsided as you’ll see in the second week of a slam, with Gauff’s being susceptible to being rushed and Garcia able to win a lot of points behind hers.
It’s worth noting that as we get deeper into these big events, and the players that remain are mostly well-known entities, the value simply doesn’t tend to be as great.
Patience is key here and I’m going to be backing Garcia to advance and maintain her scintillating summer hard-court form, but I’m going to be cautious and keep the staking relatively small here.
Odds as at 3:15 am on September 6th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
