Qinwen Zheng vs Anett Kontaveit Best Bet: Tuesday, January 3rd

A nice start to our season with the women’s selections from the United Cup, as both favourites were correctly identified as undervalued in the handicap market.

For the next few weeks, because of time zone issues with Australia, we’ll start the week on Tuesdays, with selections through Saturdays. For our best bet from the women’s tour on Tuesday, we’ll take a look at the match between Qinwen Zheng and Anett Kontaveit in Adelaide.

Qinwen Zheng vs Anett Kontaveit Preview

January 3rd, 0:30, UK Time

For those that read our season-long futures betting article, I think you’ll have an idea where I’m going with this one.

I’m bullish on the youngster from China to rise up the rankings in 2023, and this is a great place for her to start, taking on Kontaveit, where she matches up very well.

Zheng has a very balanced game, with a huge serve, powerful groundstrokes, but also able to cover the court efficiently and she has more rally tolerance than many others who strike the ball as hard as she does.

That will make things tricky for Kontaveit, whose game is well-rounded in its own right, but doesn’t possess nearly as many point-finishing weapons.

There are also questions lingering around Kontaveit’s form. After a blistering end to the 2021 campaign and a ranking that placed her among the very best in the sport, 2022 was a bit of a disappointment, losing a similar number of matches as in 2021, but with a drastic dropoff in her win total. To make matters worse, the struggles were most pronounced in the latter stages of 2022, which makes one wonder if those will linger into the early parts of this year.

Outside of her home tournament in Tallinn, Kontaveit lost a lot of matches to players that have some talent, but aren’t exactly at the top of the game (think Anastasia Potapova, Jil Teichmann or the nearly-retired Serena Williams). With Zheng on the precipice of making a jump into the elite ranks, this looks like a tough spot for the Estonian.

Qinwen Zheng vs Anett Kontaveit Best Bet

My price for Zheng in this one is much closer to the 1.53-1.57 range than the 1.71 on offer at the moment. Further, the overvaluation of Kontaveit in the betting markets seems to be a pattern – and one that has yet to adjust.

Consider this, each of her last 10 losses have come when she was favoured. I don’t mean as a 1.80 or 1.85 near pick ‘em favourite either. We’re talking about her opposition being in the 2.40 range or higher in each of those 10 losses. That tells me that Kontaveit is a far more average player than many realise. I’m happy to take advantage of that here.

  • Selection: Zheng to win
  • Odds: 1.71 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Odds as at 4:00 am on January 2nd, 2022. Odds may now differ.
