What a win to extend the win streak to open the season on our women’s selections to three. Qinwen Zheng was cruising to victory, having led 6-1, 4-2, before a second set collapse meant she needed to win a tight 9-7 third set tiebreak to cash that bet.

In what is a loaded Adelaide field for this 500 level event, the second round gives us another matchup of strong players in Kudermetova and Andreescu.

That said, this isn’t as close of a matchup for me as the betting markets would have you believe.

The Russian has been the more consistent of the two for a while (reflected in her top-10 ranking) and for my money has a more dynamic and repeatable game than her Canadian counterpart.

Her first serve is stronger and a sneaky weapon for the 25-year-old, her forehand can dial up as much pace as Andreescu’s, but with more consistency, and her incredible doubles career to this point has helped her develop a strong game at net to add some variety to her game.

After a dominant performance against Amanda Anisimova in the first round and an underwhelming outing from Andreescu – the Canadian had to come back from 0-6, 2-5 down against Garbine Muguruza, who has been rather poor for a year now – and I’m happy to back the more in-form, well-rounded player.

Considering the fact that Andreescu has had issues sustaining success for a while, and has also dealt with injuries on a consistent basis of late, I’m happy to take Kudermetova at this price.

One can’t put too much stock in a single match either, but the polar opposite performances in the first round should also inspire more confidence in the Russian to get the win here and move into the quarterfinals.
