Well, after a poor start to the week with our women’s selections, Anna Bondar came through in a way that even took me by surprise to a certain extent. A nice dominant win as an underdog on Tuesday got us back on track.
We’ll look to find another win from Budapest on Wednesday, and we’ll once again look to Bondar to get it done, as she takes on youngster Simona Waltert in her next match from her home country’s capital city.

Wednesday’s encounter with Waltert provides another solid chance to back the Hungarian to win her match, with odds as high as 1.66 at some bookmakers.
Waltert may be a promising young prospect, but the inconsistencies from the Swiss match-to-match are a concern, and I’m not sure she’s ready just yet to take on a WTA Tour-level opponent, who’s preferred surface is clay.
Waltert has wins over the likes of Danielle Collins and Sorana Cirstea as a relatively big underdog on the dirt this year, but it’s worth noting that both of those women play a power-based, aggressive game. Against someone with the ability to dictate, but also play consistent tennis from the baseline and comfortable with the intricacies of the slower courts like Bondar, she should find it much more difficult to pull off the upset.
Other than the first serve finding some quick points, it should be tough for the young Swiss to really hit through Bondar consistently enough and play with enough composure and consistency to keep things close.
Backing Waltert in certain spots can be very profitable. Those spots, however, need to come with better odds and against a bigger name who’s primary surface preference isn’t clay, where she can exploit weaknesses and wait out errors from overly aggressive play.
Bondar doesn’t fit that bill, and yet we’re seeing her come at a cheaper price to back than someone like Sorana Cirstea from a week ago in Bucharest.
I’m happy to once again back the Hungarian playing on home soil to progress.
Odds as at 11:00 pm on September 20th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
